Dear Loyal Customers, Past Employees, Friends, and the Entire Stowe Community,
I want to express a heartfelt "Thank You" for the opportunity to proudly serve you for almost 23 years at the Harvest Market. My history with Harvest is a rich one, but greater is my connection to the Town of Stowe. I have been a visitor since I was 11, skiing Mansfield with my family, staying at our A frame in the woods many moons ago. My grandparents lodged at the original Ranch Camp escaping NYC where they braved the old Rimrocks on wooden boards. Stowe seemed like a great place to plant roots after finishing school, traveling the world, and being a craftsperson, business women, artist, and art teacher in the USVI.
Hired as a retail associate, working as assistant manager, and a proud general manager for 19 years, I have had the fortune to be creative and learn in many ways~Fancy Food Shows in NYC, visiting markets all over the world, dining and tasting, ACS, buying trips, too many menus to list, valued employees, sales initiatives, schedules, the numbers, holidays, vendors, promotions, social media, products, samples, design, sampling the latest cheese, always striving for quality and consistency, sales calls...never make them on a Friday-take note!
Mrs. Donna Carpenter provided the venue for me to flex my creative spirit, always trusting in my vision and judgement. Thanks boss for all the years.
The artistry of food, the cheesemakers, the local farmers, hand made charcuterie, and honesty of food and people, never let me down, made me strive to do more. Two amazing book signings with Ina Garten complete with a late night anniversary soiree with a champagne pour and oysters on the half shell, we set the bar.
Times change and so does business. The recent days have changed the formula for success. people to people contact has changed. I'll miss the locals who want the travel mug special, the pumpkin cranberry muffin, the Challah Fridays, the rush of Saturday espresso service, the merchandizing, space, and display. The smell of brownies and bread at 9:00am, and stock on the line. I'll miss the people who dedicated their time to make Harvest what it is. Too many names to name, you know who you are, the list is long, thank you. I have passed down the skills I have acquired over the years to many young people just starting out, good luck to you! We'll get through this time and be stronger for it. Looking forward to the days without masks and the opportunity to see people smile once again.
Peace,
Madeleine Bertrand-Gerndt

Dear Friends and Family of Harvest Market,

It is with sadness that I announce the permanent closing of Harvest Market. Unfortunately, it is no longer financially viable to continue operations in the immediate or long-term future. This was not an easy decision, as Harvest Market was literally a dream come true for me.

When Jake and I first moved to Stowe in the early β€˜90s, I was inspired to open Harvest for several reasons: I was inspired by my recent travels. During the 80s, Jake and I lived and worked in Austria for several years. My job in sales for Burton required that I travel quite a bit, visiting distributors and retailers around Europe.

Every time I visited a new European city, I would first head to the specialty cheese, meat, bread, and pastry shops before visiting the snowboard shops. I had a passion for great local food and the cultures they represented.

Moving back to Vermont, I missed the European food scene. I was inspired – and later mentored by - my good friend Ina Garten. Before becoming the famous cookbook and TV personality that she is, Ina owned a specialty food store – the Barefoot Contessa – in East Hampton. I fell in love with it and dreamed of having something like that of my own someday. I will always be grateful to Ina for working closely with me on Harvest to design the store and create the recipes.

Finally, I was inspired because I was a working mother, who wanted to provide homecooked meals for my family, but usually ended up asking: β€˜pizza or Chinese tonight?’ What I offered at Harvest is what I wanted for my own family.

For over 25 years, Harvest has been at the center of my family’s life. So many of our family traditions revolved around the fabulous food lovingly prepared by our own cooks and bakers. Whether it was our annual Thanksgiving feast or simply Challah bread on Fridays, Harvest always enriched our lives and enhanced our celebrations.

One time an interviewer asked Jake to describe his perfect day. Without hesitation he said, I would snowboard all day at Stowe, stop by Harvest Market to pick up a feast for family and friends and then serve it all while watching a Giants game (they would win of course).

While our focus was fabulous food, what really made Harvest special were the people. It’s hard to express the gratitude I have for all the wonderful people who have worked at Harvest over the years. They are the ones who made Harvest much more than a workplace, they made it a family.

A special shout-out to Maddy who was passionate about food and about people, and always treated the business as if it were her own.

Thank you to all our loyal customers. We will miss you.

With gratitude,

Donna
