Why water is not a solvent during the ice-water sieving process:
"Cannabis glandular trichomes are classified as having a subcuticular type of storage cavity, as the cavity forms via the separation of a cell wall layer directly below the cuticle, which increases in surface area and distends dramatically with metabolite accumulation in the apoplast (Tissier et al. 2017).
In contrast to the hydrophilic primary cell wall, plant cuticles are lipidic. The cuticle consists of cutin, which is made of hydroxylated fatty acids covalently bound via polyester bonds, and hydrophobic waxes (Yeats and Rose 2013). Definitions:
1. hydrophilic = water-loving, water-loving" or having a strong attraction to water, allowing a substance to easily mix with, dissolve in, or absorb water. Common examples include sugar, salt, and soap.
2. lipidic = means of, relating to, or being a lipid (a fat, oil, wax, or related fat-like organic compound that does not dissolve in water).
3. cutin = A natural polymer made of linked fatty acids. It is a tough, waxy, waterproof substance found on the outer skin of plant leaves and stems.
4. nonpolar = a molecule or bond has an even, balanced sharing of electrical charges. There are no positive or negative ends (or poles) on the molecule.
5. aerial = In this scientific context, "aerial" means the parts of a plant that grow above the ground and are exposed directly to the open air.
6. non-stomatal water loss = Without the nonpolar waxy layer, water would constantly leak out of every single surface cell into the dry air. The waxy cuticle acts like a sealed plastic wrap, forcing the plant to only lose water through its stomata, which it can control.
