Emerald Acres Farm of Door County

Emerald Acres Farm of Door County Small sustainable farm offering fresh vegetables, fruit, and Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. We grow our herbs, vegetables and fruit using organic practices.

We are Livin' the Dream on our small sustainable farm where we grow and raise healthy food for a healthy community and healthy environment. Our farm is located near Sturgeon Bay in beautiful Door County, Wisconsin. Seasonally, we offer fresh herbs, vegetables, fruit, eggs from free-ranging hens, pastured meat chickens, purebred Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, mixed breed dairy goats (mini-alpines and

mini-oberhasli) and grass-fed goat meat for sale. Our egg-laying chickens (a mixed flock of >6 different breeds, some of which are Heritage breeds) are pastured in rotation around the property and enjoy eating a variety of plants and insects to supplement their fed. During the summer, we raise our meat chickens in portable pens, which we rotate daily on our pastures. Our purebred Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats were bred for their excellence in dairy quality, temperament and conformation and make great milking, show or pet goats for families and microfarms. We also raise mixed breed, non-registered mini-alpines and mini-oberhasli dairy goats for sale. Our goats (for meat when available) are browse and grass-fed (grain-free diet) and we employ rotational grazing practices for all goats on our property. Their pasture diet is supplemented with hay along with the vegetables we grow. All our animals are treated respectfully and allowed access to the outdoors, sunlight, and fresh air they need! We will work toward organic certification as our business grows sufficiently to financially support the certification process. Contact us to purchase produce, eggs, or meat straight from the farm or visit us this summer at the Sturgeon Bay Farmer's Market! Our family....This entire operation is run by our small family of four, David (he also works a full-time job outside of the home!), Valerie and our two beautiful and energetic children. The farming business is A LOT of work and we started nearly from scratch. Some days we feel overwhelmed and wonder how to best focus our efforts on the farm. After each of our children were born and with each passing season, our vision grows a little more clear as we work to grow and raise healthy food for our family and community. Emerald Acres Farm is truly the perfect place for our family to embark on this exciting adventure together, and we look forward to sharing our production with the great community here in Door County, WI. Farm goals....
Our goal is to provide healthy whole foods raised and grown ethically and respectfully to our community. We passionately care about the health of our environment and the food we produce—our farm practices reflect these values. By using organic practices, we provide habitat for native pollinators and manage our land to benefit wildlife. Looking toward the future....
As we gain experience and refine our techniques, we intend to grow our little farm to produce a larger selection of herbs, vegetables and fruit including heirloom and difficult to find varieties, eggs from free-ranging hens, pasture raised meat chickens, free-ranging turkeys, beautiful quality purebred Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats, mixed breed (mini-alpines and mini-oberhasli) dairy goats, and goat meat for sale. We are considering the option of working toward organic certification as our business grows sufficiently to financially support the certification process.

The new high tunnel is almost done! We just need to finish the doors. Thanks all who came out to help with the ole fashion barn raising event of pulling the plastic on. It was kinda like a real world version of the elementary school parachute game. Many hands are needed for this job and you showed up!

First hilling of the potatoes is done! We plant our potatoes shallow so they sprout quickly. We then hoe and hill slightly after they emerge. This controls the weeds and also builds soil around their base for later tuber production. We will do this once more and then lay a layer of straw or old hay for mulch. This year the potatoes went in between the rows of young peach, apricot and cherry trees.

Ever see the old movie, "Aliens"...the one where the aliens lay an egg inside a body and then it hatches inside the person? Well, the real world is even stranger and more vicious. This cool looking bug is a parasitic wasp. They like to eat nectar, however, they lay their eggs in unsuspecting catapillars and the babies hatch inside only to eat their way through the catapillar's insides eventually killing it. These beneficial insects are the ones who do the work of keeping pest in check on our vegetable plants and fruit trees!

More early tomatoes and peppers coming your way this year! And early season greens for next year! It may seem like we've been a little quiet on social media recently, but it's not because there aren't great things happening on the farm. We've been SUPER busy with springtime planting work, but the highlight is that we've been putting up a 2nd high tunnel! This will add an additional 30'x95' of covered growing space to the farm allowing us to grow more heat loving crops in this cool Door County climate and provide protected space for growing late and early season greens and other cool season crops. We are excited to see the tunnel starting to take shape!

We use minimal till/no till techniques as often as possible on the farm. However, the plot where this year's onion crop is being rotated to got a little too weedy last season and required that we till ahead of planting. Following tilling, we switch over to our wheel hoe to help shape and form slightly raised beds ahead of planting. The hilling attachment is a wonderful tool to use when the soil is loose. We then use a bed rake to finish forming the beds. Now the area is prepped for planting this week! Anthony O'Hern from our farm team makes this look easy!

We using the use the hilling attachment for our wheel hoe to form slightly raised onion beds.
