I may get a little flack for this, but just stick with me. Just hear it from my heart. After talking with someone nearly having a panic attack scared to post a flyer she created bc of how mean people can be. My heart broke at the desperation In her voice “just trying to figure out what to do to get more business but afraid to be judged.”
I’m a huge advocate for shopping small, supporting local, and using local creatives whenever possible. And I do. I truly believe in community supporting community. But I also believe in doing what you can, when you can, with what you have.
Lately I’ve seen a lot of comments about businesses using AI for flyers or graphics and people saying things like it gives them the “ick” or makes them not want to support that business. And honestly, I think we forget that not everyone has the same resources, finances, knowledge, or support. We forget we all started somewhere, maybe not how they are but we started with little.
Maybe hiring a designer just isn’t possible for them right now. Maybe they’re trying to keep costs low while staying afloat. Maybe they’re simply doing the best they can with the tools they have access to. That doesn’t make them lazy or less deserving of support.
Do I miss the more personal, human side of things? Absolutely. I don’t even love self checkout because I enjoy the interaction and connection with people and hate thinking of a job not being available to someone. But technology is becoming part of everyday life whether we love it or not, and many small businesses are just trying to adapt and survive in the middle of it all.
If we really want to help small businesses, reach out privately. Share tips or knowledge. Offer help or your services if you’re able. Support where and how you can. But if you’re not in a position to financially help someone, try not to assume they’re in a position to afford every service that’s out there either.
A little grace, staying humble and understanding goes a long way. Especially to a business owner that’s crying behind the screen wondering if they will even be able to stay open another day.
