In the Woods Market Garden

In the Woods Market Garden Specializing in naturally grown fruit and vegetables. Go to my website for CSA information! I am Certified Naturally Grown (CNG).

CNG is a grassroots organization that offers peer-review certification to farmers and beekeepers producing food, flowers, and fiber for their local communities by working in harmony with nature, without the use of synthetic chemicals or GMOs. I practice the no-till gardening method. I disturb the soil as little as possible, keep the garden planted as much as possible and if it can't be planted, ke

ep it covered with mulch. I use cover cropping to help with fertility and keep the soil biology fed and happy. They are the ones feeding the plants.

A lot more planted this week. This time, it was mostly direct seeded things: carrots, parsnips, radish, rutabaga, beets, spinach, potatoes and yellow beans. The weeding is coming along pretty good. 😁
The asparagus is coming up nicely as well. We've had a few meals of that. The arugula is making an appearance too.

A week's worth of planting: broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, swiss chard, head lettuce, kohlrabi and parsley. I'm still using the Styrofoam cups to keep the cutworms away. We finally got some rain last night. It's the first time it rained this month. I also got a lot of weeding done. You can tell by the pictures which rows I've done 😁

The calendar says spring, but when I was out planting the onions and leeks today, I was wearing my winter jacket, a wool hat and I saw snowflakes. The garlic and rhubarb have made an appearance, but not the asparagus. The season has begun!

The 2026 season has started!! I planted my first seeds today. 1,500 green onions, 500 yellow onions, 750 red onions and 250 leeks. I've increased the number of green onions I usually plant. I'm hoping they will last most of the season.
Looks like the snow took out part of the chicken wire that surrounds my front garden. I'll have some fixing up to do once the snow melts.
If you're interested in joining my CSA, now is the time to do it. Don't forget I'm having a Superior pickup location this year. Go to my website for all the details.

Happy New Year! 🎊 The gardens are blanketed in snow. That helps the perennials survive the frigid temps. The seeds for this year have already arrived. I'm going to grow kabocha squash instead of hubbard squash. I'm going to try snack peppers, which is a mini sweet pepper, and I'll try ground cherries and a fingerling potato. In order to fit them in, I'll be growing less turnips, kale and bok choy. My website is taking longer than expected to update for this year's CSA signup. I'll let you know when it's ready. A preview of the information is I'll be having a pickup location in Superior!

The chickens finally started laying eggs! I've got my seed order put together. I like to wait a few days before I place the order. I've already changed it once and remembered something I wanted to change up from last year. I'm adding ground cherries and sweet peppers. Hubbard squash is out and a lot less turnips will be planted.

I'm done with the outside garden work for the year! Just finished gathering leaves today. I cover all 43 beds, the fence line where peas and flowers are planted and then I put more in a cage for when I hill my potatoes next year. Also, since I run them through a shredder/mulcher before I spread them on the beds, they can decompose pretty quickly in the summer. I want extra for when my beds become bare of mulch next year. I never want to see bare ground under my plants. As I'm working on leaves, I was figuring out what changes I'll make for next year. I'll work on my seed order pretty soon.

Washing veggies at this time of year is really no fun. I put on my canoeing rain gear, galoshes to keep my feet dry and rubber gloves to keep my fingers dry. They will lose all feeling when they are cold and wet. This is the only reason I'm glad to see the season end. For the last week of CSA pickup, I'll have kale, leeks, carrots, parsnips, onion, potatoes and winter squash (acorn, butternut, buttercup, hubbard and delicata).
