Beautiful Black Bear

04/21/2026

Over the coming months, thousands of kittens will rely on us for expert care, safe shelter and lots of love. You can make a BIG difference for these vulnerable little ones by donating a special gift from our virtual Kitten Shower registries at sdhumane.org/kittenshower. We’re still in need of essential items to make sure these babies have everything they need to grow healthy and strong. Thank mew!

Don’t mow in April.

Try it for just one month.

“No Mow April” (an extension of No Mow May) is a simple way to support pollinators—especially early in the season, when food is limited.

🌱 Why it helps:

1️⃣ Let your lawn grow for a few weeks
→ Clover, violets, dandelions, and other low flowers begin to bloom

2️⃣ These early blooms matter
→ Many bees emerge in spring when few other nectar sources are available

3️⃣ Less disturbance = safer habitat
→ Ground-nesting bees rely on undisturbed soil
→ Butterfly larvae and other insects often shelter in taller grass

🐝 What you might notice:

→ Week 1: Grass gets taller. Not much else changes
→ Week 2: Early blooms appear. A few bees show up
→ Week 3: More flowers open. Pollinator activity increases
→ Week 4: A noticeable uptick in bees and other insects—depending on your yard and region

(Results vary based on climate, soil, and what’s already growing in your lawn.)

📊 What research shows:

→ Lawns mowed less frequently tend to produce more flowers
→ More flowers generally support more pollinators
→ Even small changes—like mowing every 2–3 weeks instead of weekly—can make a difference

🌿 Don’t want a wild-looking yard?

You don’t have to stop mowing forever:

→ Mow once at the end of the month (around 3–4 inches high)
→ Then switch to mowing every 2–3 weeks
→ Leave clover—it helps add nitrogen to the soil naturally
→ Expect a slightly wilder look—but a more active, living lawn

🏡 Concerned about HOA rules?

→ Pollinator-friendly practices are gaining support in many areas
→ A small sign like: “No Mow April — Pollinator Habitat” can help explain your approach
→ It often sparks curiosity—and good conversations—with neighbors

🌼 One important note:

“No Mow” helps—but it’s not a complete solution.
For bigger impact, combine it with:

→ Planting native flowers
→ Reducing pesticide use
→ Creating habitat that lasts beyond one month

One month. One simple experiment.

Your mower can wait.
The bees can’t. 🐝
