🌱 De La Mesa Farms Featured in South Sound Magazine!

We’re incredibly honored to be featured in the newest issue of South Sound Magazine highlighting the story behind De La Mesa Farms and the work we’re doing here in Tacoma.

What started as a small backyard microgreens project has grown into a regenerative 2-acre farm dedicated to growing healthy food, supporting local schools, feeding our community, and reconnecting with Indigenous growing traditions.

From experimenting with heritage corn for handmade tortillas to growing year-round greens and brassicas, everything we do is about maximizing every square foot of land while farming organically and regeneratively.

We’re especially proud to be partnering again with the Multicultural Child & Family Hope Center to donate 100 CSA bags this spring to families in the Hilltop community.

This farm has always been about more than just food.
It’s about community, culture, and creating access to fresh, local produce for everyone.

Huge gratitude to everyone who has supported us along the way — our CSA members, farmers market customers, local chefs, schools, and neighbors. You’re the reason this farm continues to grow.

When I was a kid, my grandma would bring tamales from Mexico during the holidays — little triangles wrapped in banana leaf. She said they were only made once a year, when the corn was ready.

I’ve been trying to recreate that memory for years, and I finally did.

These are pure masa tamales — no fillings, no extras. Just the flavor of the corn, the banana leaf, and the fat used in the masa. After testing a lot of options, Wagyu beef tallow has been my favorite.

This is a very special project for me, rooted in childhood memories and my family’s Mexican cooking traditions. I’m excited to finally share it with you. Happy new year

Online orders coming soon — stay tuned 🌽🍃

Eight years ago, I had the honor and privilege of being part of the GoFarm Hawai‘i cohort — an experience that completely changed my life. This program didn’t just teach me how to farm… it gave me the foundation, confidence, and community that made my entire career possible.

trains commercial farmers, but what they really do is build leaders, stewards, and people who understand the responsibility of growing food for their communities. It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I truly would not be the farmer I am today without it.

I started my farming journey in Hawai‘i, and in 2021 — during the height of the pandemic — we took a leap of faith and relocated to the Pacific Northwest. Everything I’m doing now, everything De La Mesa Farms has become, traces back to those early days in the cohort.

I owe an enormous amount of gratitude to Jay , whose guidance and support over the years—especially back then—kept me going. And to the entire GoFarm Hawai‘i team: thank you. I would not still be farming if it wasn’t for you.

If anyone is considering entering agriculture, I could not recommend GoFarm Hawai‘i more highly. It is truly one of the best farmer training programs in the country.

Mahalo to this crew for shaping the farmer I am today. 🌱🤙

It’s not always sunshine, flowers, and pretty pictures on the farm.
With the colder weather settling in, predators start to move closer — and last night, a coyote found its way into our chickens.

This morning, all that’s left is a scattering of feathers. It’s one of the hardest parts of farm life — walking out to find the aftermath of something that feels so senseless. They don’t always kill to eat. Sometimes, it feels like they do it just for sport.

This is the second time in five years I’ve lost a flock to coyotes, and it never gets easier. These hens were beautiful, full of personality, and such a big part of the rhythm here.

Farming isn’t always pretty. It’s heartbreak, resilience, and starting over — again and again.
Time to rebuild. Time for a new flock.

A sunflower in late October? 🌻
I wasn’t expecting this — and maybe that’s why it hit so hard.
In the middle of the fog, the fallen leaves, the slow turning inward of the farm… this little burst of sun just appeared.

It’s the small, quiet miracles that remind you to keep your heart open.
A bright star when you least expect it.
Joy, for no reason at all.

Here’s to the unexpected beauty.
Here’s to October sunflowers. 🌞🍂

Hey friends! 🌽✨
We’ve got fresh tortillas on deck tomorrow at the farmers market — both blue corn and white corn, made from heirloom corn grown right here at De La Mesa Farms.

Check out our video — these are coming hot off the tortilla machine, pressed and ready to feed the soul. First come, first served. See you in the morning! 🌞

Here’s a warm, spirited caption you can post — it carries the awe, gratitude, color, and momentum you’re feeling, while naturally building excitement for tortillas + market:

Winter abundance in full bloom 🌿✨
Broccoli, cauliflower, purple + yellow cauli, brussels… the brassicas are singing right now. The land is so alive — and I’m feeling it too. Revitalized. Aligned. Full of purpose.

Living in rhythm with the seasons is pure magic — grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. This winter spread is gorgeous and it’s only just beginning.

And YES… tortillas are coming. Tortillas, tortillas, tortillas. Fresh on the farm — and bright at market this week. 🌽🔥

The abundance is real. The future is bright. See you soon.

WE GOT THE BANDS FROM CHIHUAHUA 🇲🇽🔥
The tortilla machine is officially coming ALIVE.

Just unboxed the final pieces all the way from Chihuahua, Mexico — tonight I’ll be doing the first test cook, and TOMORROW MORNING we’re rolling masa and pressing FRESH, HOT TORTILLAS right here on the farm.

📍 De La Mesa Farms
⏰ 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Tomorrow)
First come, first serve — these will not last long.
Come get them while they’re hot off the press.

We’ll be grinding fresh corn in the morning and serving tortillas straight from the machine — no preservatives, no shortcuts, just ancient tradition + modern fire.

Pull up. Take them home warm. Taste the origin.
