There are certain moments in your life when you catch the one you love doing something so striking.
Brandon told me at the start of my chicken journey, he already had chickens.. this was my thing.. he’s not helping.. no more than 8.. probably internally “shut up and pick some so we can get out of the farm store, it’s been an hour”.. the list could go on.
But every day since, he’s been the leader in this whole thing. Building an addition on to the coop because 8 turned into chicken math, picking up bags of feed and bedding, collecting eggs.. Now I’ll tell ya what, this man.. he does a lot between work and home. And sure, there’s some griping, some reminding me this was my thing, but he’s always there to help me on this journey because he knows that I really do love these feathered fluff butts.
But tonight.. see, we inherited a chicken in a not so great state a few days ago, suffering from either a broken leg or some sort of neurological issue from the pecking injury on her head/neck which severely impacts her mobility and balance. Now, for those that know Brandon, he’s not one to sugar coat and he’s definitely not one to let an animal suffer. As soon as he saw her, he was the first to say get one of our cages, set it up, and bring her home.
This chicken is my heart chicken. She’s become my little baby. I swaddle her up in an old shirt and she’s instantly snoozing, snuggling into my neck, armpit, elbow, wherever she deems fit. She’s travelled pretty well everywhere she can with me, aside from work. I say she, but Brandon is not secretly hoping he’s a roo so he can name him Lieutenant Dan (get it.. Forrest Gump.. no legs 🙄).
Tonight, after who knows what with work, a school function, mowing the lawn and then working on the lawnmower and Lord knows what else out there, Brandon created his own little leg stint, cutting and molding metal and wrapping and bracing the leg she’s struggling with. I’d later find him laying on the ground outside with her, trying to get her used to the brace and the concept of bearing weight on it.
This may seem really silly to some, but this is one of those moments.
