Despite the dreary weather this week, we were able to start a new project!

We put out our very first swarm trap. As the day light hours increase both feral and domesticated honey bees start to prepare for spring. With this comes an increase in swarming due to hives splitting. By introducing swarm boxes to the area, we are preventing swarms from establishing their home in undesired locations. We are excited about this new addition to the property and hope to catch a swarm to add to our apiary.

Spring must be on the way! Did you know asparagus grows for three years before producing spears big enough to harvest? For the past two years we have patiently cultivated these beds and we are eager to finally reap what we have sown.
