This summer was brutal but the bees are doing well! So well in fact that we got a bumper crop with all those rains (very thankful for that).

Forage was primarily mesquite and creosote (high in glucose), so this batch may crystallize faster than usual. Best practice is keep your bottles at 75-78F if possible, as glucose will remain soluble and crystals will form much slower. If it does crystallize, a warm water bath will bring it right back. Ok, chemistry class is over…

Here’s a better shot… you can see how they are in line with one another, they are set up like that (inline) all throughout the hive, directing air flow (you can actually feel it).

Water foragers will bring water to the hive, deposit the water inside the hive surfaces, while that inline fanning acts as a swamp cooler would.

Pretty cool… and sounds more like a fleet of WWII bombers! Ok, back to work, it’s too hot out here for this social media nonsense.

Some of you asked how the bees stay cool; a constant water source at the apiary and thousands of fanning wings directing heat out of the hive. Evaporative cooling! If you listen closely, it literally sounds like a fan.

Hello everyone, Bear Creek Gold will need to pause all market attendance and local deliveries between 18-28 August.

During this period we will be focusing our energy in the apiaries; colony health inspections, harvesting, splitting, and finally the establishment of a long overdue apiary site in Patagonia! Then switch gears into honey extraction/bottling. We will try to capture a few videos if conditions allow, but the heat usually has us focused on simply getting the work done.

We are planning to return to the St. Philip's Plaza Market with fresh product on August 29.

There is a quiet pride when you put YOUR own label on something YOU have created with YOUR own hands. You know every step that went into it, the early mornings, late evening’s, the careful work, the waiting, the countless decisions and struggles that no one sees.

Then someone stops at the market table, tries a sample, their expression changes to a smile. It’s that moment where it feels like everything feels worthwhile. The work, the care, the reason YOU started this little adventure in the first place.

Bear Creek Gold will be introducing our honeybee hive starter kits this weekend, at the St. Philip's Plaza Market.

Two quality full kit options are available.

The first is an assembled three tier painted hive with two deep supers and one medium super, complete with frames/foundation, a stainless steel hive stand, a stainless steel smoker w/fuel, a stainless steel hive tool, and a beekeeper’s handbook, priced at $398 excluding tax.

The second is an assembled wax dipped hive (never need to paint) with the same configuration, priced at $475 excluding tax.

Please note… We are not in a position to sell bees or provide beekeeping classes this year, but we are happy to recommend trusted Tucson sources if asked.

And and quick note on the price point… We were not able to reach the price point we originally hoped for, but we are still going to offer them to gauge community interest. We also understand this price point is not for everyone, but we did our best to offer a cost conscious solution while keeping equipment quality the top priority.

Based on interest, we have decided to test the demand for Hive Starter Kits at the St. Philip's Plaza Market. In the coming weeks we will be preparing hive kits that include: a complete hive, stainless smoker tool, stainless hive tool, and the “Beginner’s Beekeeper Handbook” fifth edition. The goal being$300 or less. We’d also like to share an opportunity for free beekeeper training (at the bottom of this post).

Supplies will be limited while we measure community interest. If you’d like more information, come chat with us at the market (Saturday/Sunday 8am-Noon) so you can see these products in person and ask any questions.

***Quick disclaimer/awareness, there are numerous prerequisites that one must be aware of before buying a hive kit and throwing some bees into it… critical decision points include honeybee genetics/sources, quality hands on hive management training, an understanding of honeybee biology/pests/pathogens, required protective gear, and of course extraction equipment. All of which have limitless options and price points, so we simply can’t get into all of that here, but we are more than happy to recommend trusted sources and quality support equipment, if you inquire.

As to beekeeper training, all active duty military, veterans, and first responders are offered free beekeeping training through Hives For Heroes Group. As part of our work with that program and our University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Master Beekeeper path, we may also be offering a limited number of free mentorships in the near future; Ask us how it works.
