This little heifer calf was born yesterday to a member of the Bad Moms Club. Let me explain…
When my husband and I bought this herd from my grandpa a few years ago, we had our work cut out for us. My grandpa had some seriously wild and crazy cows still producing calves in the herd. We don’t mind a little crazy but these were next level crazy. We’re talking scaling vertical fences, impossible to catch and care for, aggressive towards us when we’d enter the pasture and also terrible mothering instincts. All of these issues lead to more difficulty producing the safest and healthiest animals. So we’ve taken the last 3 years to sort through and cull as many of the wild ones that made sense.
This heifer calf’s mama was a first time mom and even though she was offspring of one of the original crazies, we were magically hoping to have success with her. Unfortunately my fairytale wish didn’t come true.
Her mama was nowhere in sight and had zero interest in her. I’d love to try and graft her on to her mama but we can’t corral her in to get them in a pen together.
For now we’ll bottle feed her back at our house. I LOVE being able to bottle feed but having them with their mama is still always the best option. We may take her back out to the pasture and try to reunite again but I know it’s a very slim chance of success.
