Yes, Vandergrift, there will be a Farmer's Market this summer! We are planning some final details but wanted to let everyone know that we will be back. Here is some information that we want to share with you.
The Market will again be held on Thursdays from 4 - 6 pm over the summer growing season, most likely June through September.
Yes, we know. You would love to see this market on Saturdays. Unfortunately, a farmers market is a farmer's market, and local farmers need to attend more than one market per week to generate enough of an income source to make the hard work of farming worth their while. Unfortunately, there are markets that generate much greater sales and foot traffic on Saturdays than we experience in Vandergrift, so we cannot fault our farmers for choosing the best opportunities for themselves. So for that reason, our market will remain on Thursdays. Location will be announced after we receive approval from the Borough Council at their May meeting.
We want to remind everyone that this is a true farmer's market, and as such supports local farmers, growers, bakers, and makers. This isn't meant to be a craft show or a food truck rally. This is an attempt to bring fresh, local food to Vandergrift. This will be reflected in the vendors that you find at the market, and by the prices of products.
Yes, the loaf of bread you can buy at the big blue box store will be cheaper. Yes a dozen ears of corn later this summer will also be cheaper there than at the Farmer's Market. But those who choose to shop at a Farmer's Market are supporting their neighbor farmers, caring about ingredients and quality, and willing to pay a little more for produce that hasn't been riding around on a truck for days before it reaches the big box store.
Thanks to one of our participants, we're happy to report that we will be able to accept SNAP as a form of payment for eligible food items, which we know provides a great service to our community.
Because this is a real Farmer's Market with real farmers, please don't be disappointed if the first couple of weeks have limited produce for sale as the crops grow. Likewise, the goal is for the farmers to sell out of their products weekly, so unfortunately those who come later in the evening may be disappointed with limited choices. We know that our farmers will do the best that they can to provide as much product as they can, but at the end of the day they are at the mercy of the weather and other factors.
Here's where we need you. We are hoping to have two volunteers sign up for each Thursday over the summer season. Volunteers will help shoppers carry purchases to their cars, assist with traffic control, lend a hand to the farmers in setting up, etc. Volunteers won't be selling or taking money. If you would be willing to volunteer for at least two evenings, please message this page so that we can add you to the list. Volunteers are desperately needed to help keep programs like this afloat in Vandergrift.
Last, if you know of any vendors who grow, bake, or make their own food products (and have appropriate credentials or licensing as per USFDA requirements) please ask them to reach out to us for information about becoming a vendor at this year's Farmer's Market. We would love to grow our tiny but tenacious little market with more vendors this year!
The Farmer's Market is sponsored by the Vandergrift Improvement Program, and we are looking forward to another great season of continuing to bring fresh food to Vandergrift.
