The most powerful thing you can do for nature this spring?

Pick one corner of your yard.

Then… leave it alone.

No mowing.
No spraying.
No constant “tidying.”

Just let it be.

YEAR ONE
→ “Weeds” appear (some are native wildflowers)
→ Grasses grow taller
→ Insects begin to arrive
→ It may look a little messy

YEAR TWO
→ Wild plants start to establish
→ Native bees may nest in the ground
→ Birds begin foraging there
→ Small wildlife (like toads) may move in
→ It starts to feel alive

YEAR THREE
→ Taller plants create shelter and nesting spots
→ More butterflies and pollinators show up
→ You may notice new species you’ve never seen before
→ Biodiversity increases—often far beyond a typical lawn

HOW MUCH SPACE DO YOU NEED?
→ 4×4 feet is enough to start
→ 10×10 feet can become a true micro-habitat
→ A corner works—behind the garage, along a fence, under a tree

“But what about the neighbors?”

A perfectly trimmed lawn can look neat—but it supports very little life.

A small wild patch?
It becomes a living ecosystem.

A FEW IMPORTANT NOTES

1️⃣ Some “weeds” are beneficial natives—but others may be invasive
→ Remove aggressive or harmful species when needed

2️⃣ This isn’t zero effort
→ It’s less work, not no work

3️⃣ Results vary by location
→ Wildlife may take time to find your space

The most meaningful conservation doesn’t require money.
Or expertise.
Or constant effort.

Sometimes, it simply means doing less.

In one small corner.

Starting today.

Because the hardest part isn’t the work—
it’s letting go of the idea that nature needs our permission to exist.

🍄🍄 MISSOURI MOREL HUNTING – 2026 SOIL TEMPERATURE REPORT🍄🍄

Good morning, Morel Maniacs!
It’s that time of year again… we’re officially firing up the 4" soil temperature reports for the 2026 Missouri morel season! 🌡️🌱

For those new to the page — morels typically begin fruiting once soil temperatures reach ideal growing conditions at 4 inches. From here on out, we’ll be tracking it closely across the state and watching the progression unfold week by week.

Let’s take a look at where things stand right now 👇

🌡️ CURRENT 4" SOIL TEMPERATURE SNAPSHOT

Northern Missouri: 22°–27°
Still very cold. Frost is holding strong and the ground has a long way to go.

Central Missouri: 31°–33°
We’re beginning to see some gradual warming, but we remain well below active fruiting conditions.

Southern Missouri: 33°–38°
The southern tier is leading the charge, with a few pockets reaching the upper 30s. This is where we’ll see the first real movement once spring locks in.

🍄 What This Means For The Season

Right now, Missouri is in the pre-warm phase. Soil is slowly coming to life, and the buildup is steady. Once southern counties push higher and central Missouri warms more consistently, the pace picks up — and it picks up fast.

🔥 Season Anticipation

You can feel it building now. 🌱
The woods are on the edge of waking up, and the soil is creeping toward those ideal temperatures. With warmer weather on the way later this week, things are about to heat up fast — and when Missouri turns the corner, it doesn’t ease in… it explodes. 🍄🔥

Boots by the door. Mesh bags ready. Honey holes on your mind.

Missouri… the season is almost here.🍀🍄🍀🍄

FUN FACT: The name "Black Friday" comes from the practice of using black ink to signify profit in accounting, while red ink signified losses.

The term 'Black Friday' was first used September 24, 1969 to describe an event that caused mass chaos and financial turmoil. Financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk had cornered the gold market, which caused the U.S. stock market to crash, when President Ulysses M. Grant released gold into regular circulation.

Later, in the 1950s and 60s, the Philadelphia police began using the term 'Black Friday' to describe the unruly crowds of shoppers and tourists who came to their city the day after Thanksgiving. In 1980s, retailers began to reshape the event into a more friendly and positive image, while also using the notion to turn their profitability for the entire year.

TRIVIA TIME: What famous sporting event has roots based in the wild habit that is called "Black Friday" today?
