Heights Grocery

Heights Grocery Heights Grocery is a neighborhood grocery store serving the north end of Vashon Island.

Heights Grocery will occupy the existing Grange hall on the north end of Vashon Island. We plan to be open for business in 2023 and be able to serve our north end neighbors as well as all other island residents and visitors alike. We are an inclusive business and hope to serve all ethnicities and genders.

So what’s Next for Heights Grocery?
Sharing a quick update and a little peek at what’s coming next.

Behind the scenes, Heights Grocery is moving steadily forward. We’ve recently been granted the Certificate of Appropriateness from King County Landmark Commission, a gold seal of approval for the light-touch alternations that will be made to the hall to convert to a neighborhood market and coffee shop.

Permit applications are nearly complete for civil and structural engineering, as well as health department requirements. Planning continues and the pieces are really starting to line up. It’s certainly not the flashy part of the process, but these are necessary steps that make everything else possible.

This spring, we’ll also be opening up a new way for the community to get involved. We are planning a Kickstarter that will give people an opportunity to support the store and be part of building it - in ways big and small. Think tangible, local, and very Heights Grocery.

More details are coming soon about how your support will make this project come to life. Momentum is steady and growing! We’d love to hear from you about what makes you excited about giving.

Thank you for sticking with us and believing in this project. We are so excited about what’s ahead and grateful to be building it together!

THAT SHINY NEW THING WE PROMISED? IT’S HERE.

Neighbors,

You’ve been patient through all the updates about meetings, permit timelines, and more meetings (did I mention the meetings?) You already know the Grange hall is now officially landmarked – the only Grange in King County with that honor. Now we get to celebrate what that really means: Heights Grocery has a forever home inside those old log walls.

This is the kick-off. The moment when an idea starts turning into a place. Your place! Heights Grocery will bring back what islanders have always valued: a place to gather (that also happens to be a grocery store. ) Rooted in the north end and open to the whole island, offering what we’ve been missing. Fuel for daily commuters, all the staples and fresh produce for the week, and a dedicated space for a sip and chat with a neighbor in the morning and at the end of the day.

Long-time islanders tell fond stories about the Dockton Store, the Portage Store, Lavender’s Store, where you could pick up milk, mail, and meat from the butcher all in one stop. Heights Grocery is our chance to carry that spirit forward and create that same kind of neighborhood store again, a place that feels like it’s always been there.

On Saturday, September 6, we’ll gather for the landmark celebration of the hall. Along with food, music, and fun, there will be two special ways to mark the moment. You can pick up one of our limited-edition market totes (pretty stylish and cute, if I do say so myself) to carry a little piece of Heights Grocery with you wherever you go. And for those who want to leave something lasting, you can make a donation toward a flagstone that will be set in the store entry with your family’s name featured. Years from now, people will walk past and see that you were here when it all began.

Good news deserves a proper celebration, so we’re throwing a party! Saturday, September 6, from 4 to 6 at the old Grange Hall. Lemonade, hotdogs, Vashon’s only VasHonk Band, face painting, and fun games. We’ll also share the vision for Heights Grocery and how we get from here to opening day.

This is the shiny new thing: It’s both history and future and we promise it’s going to be good.

Friends & Neighbors! The former Vashon-Maury Grange Hall is now landmarked! King County Historic Preservation has designated our old hall as the only landmarked Grange in King County – a major milestone for our upcoming neighborhood store.

For over 70 years, this building has been the island's gathering place – first as the North End Community Center, then as our Grange hall starting in the 1960s. For decades, it's hosted everything from Irish dancing and art classes to non-profit meetings and memorial services for beloved neighbors. Step inside and you'll feel it too – that cozy, rustic charm with wooden beams that takes you back to summer camp mess halls and simpler times.

Heights Grocery will carry on that tradition as a community-centered market where you'll discover thoughtfully sourced finds, chat with the people who grow your food, and pick up dinner inspiration along with your groceries. A place that belongs to this community.

Time to celebrate this landmark moment together.

Saturday, September 6, 4 – 6 PM
10365 SW Cowan Road

Join us for a farewell to summer and a celebration of what we're building – fresh lemonade and juicy watermelon, yummy hotdogs hot off the grill, live music from VasHonk band, face painting, co****le, and putt-putt golf for the kids. We'll share our vision, hear what you're hoping for, and you can grab one of our limited edition totes (all proceeds go toward the project.)

See you there – it's going to be good.
