THAT SHINY NEW THING WE PROMISED? IT’S HERE.
Neighbors,
You’ve been patient through all the updates about meetings, permit timelines, and more meetings (did I mention the meetings?) You already know the Grange hall is now officially landmarked – the only Grange in King County with that honor. Now we get to celebrate what that really means: Heights Grocery has a forever home inside those old log walls.
This is the kick-off. The moment when an idea starts turning into a place. Your place! Heights Grocery will bring back what islanders have always valued: a place to gather (that also happens to be a grocery store. ) Rooted in the north end and open to the whole island, offering what we’ve been missing. Fuel for daily commuters, all the staples and fresh produce for the week, and a dedicated space for a sip and chat with a neighbor in the morning and at the end of the day.
Long-time islanders tell fond stories about the Dockton Store, the Portage Store, Lavender’s Store, where you could pick up milk, mail, and meat from the butcher all in one stop. Heights Grocery is our chance to carry that spirit forward and create that same kind of neighborhood store again, a place that feels like it’s always been there.
On Saturday, September 6, we’ll gather for the landmark celebration of the hall. Along with food, music, and fun, there will be two special ways to mark the moment. You can pick up one of our limited-edition market totes (pretty stylish and cute, if I do say so myself) to carry a little piece of Heights Grocery with you wherever you go. And for those who want to leave something lasting, you can make a donation toward a flagstone that will be set in the store entry with your family’s name featured. Years from now, people will walk past and see that you were here when it all began.
Good news deserves a proper celebration, so we’re throwing a party! Saturday, September 6, from 4 to 6 at the old Grange Hall. Lemonade, hotdogs, Vashon’s only VasHonk Band, face painting, and fun games. We’ll also share the vision for Heights Grocery and how we get from here to opening day.
This is the shiny new thing: It’s both history and future and we promise it’s going to be good.
