“And So Together They Built a Life They Loved…”
It began in 1996 with the purchase a parcel of farm land in Marshall County. Enjoying the tranquil setting, a log cabin was erected to use as a weekend get- away. The contour of the land along with the peace and privacy it provided led to naming it Freedom Hills Farm.
In 2003, the decision to move to Marshall County was made and a home was built on the site. Meanwhile Steve had developed an interest in beekeeping and read extensively on the subject. Ready to try his hand as a beekeeper, he began with 2 hives and discovered he had a knack for raising successful colonies. The area vegetation also allowed for production of a unique and delicious tasting honey.
As demand for the honey grew, a free-standing honey house designed by Steve, was added. Sherry created the now familiar black and gold logo which appears on the honey and hive products and engaged in marketing the FHF brand.
Over the years, the operation expanded to include 100 bee hives scattered over 7 out yards, appeared in 4 local grocery stores, 5 farm markets and numerous craft fairs. It has graced the tables in 12 states across the US and made its way into 3 countries.
The Marshall County Farm Bureau and the Purdue Council for
Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching (Purdue CARET) made it possible to reach hundreds of school children, numerous Service Clubs and government officials to educate and share the honey bee story. With acquired knowledge and skill, Steve also offered classes to aspiring beekeepers promoting best practice in bee keeping and environmental stewardship. Adding to that are the countless friendships cultivated along the way.
However, “half of having a good time is knowing when to leave.” Steve and Sherry are grateful to the Michiana community. the land, home, business and beekeeping equipment along with additional household items are being offered for purchase.
