THIS is why we say buy local when you can.
Look at what is happening with our food supply right now:
🌶️ Jalapeños — Salmonella: Multistate outbreak linked to jalapeños. Some were also used in salsa, guacamole and pico de gallo.
🥬 Iceberg Lettuce — Cyclospora: Large multistate outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from Mexico that was distributed to stores and restaurants.
🫐 Frozen Blueberries — E. coli: Outbreak linked to certain frozen blueberries and berry mixes. This is one to actually check your freezer for.
🥚 Shell Eggs — Salmonella: Multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to certain shell eggs.
🥩 Pastrami & Corned Beef — Listeria Recall: Thousands of pounds recalled because of possible Listeria contamination.
🥩 Imported Raw Beef — Recall: Nearly 30,000 pounds recalled because it entered the country without required USDA import reinspection.
🥓 Imported Bacon — Recall: Around 12,000 pounds of Canadian smoked bacon recalled because it was also imported without required USDA reinspection.
Buying local doesn’t mean there is zero risk. That’s not the point.
The point is that our food travels through an ENORMOUS system before it ever reaches our tables, and most of us have absolutely no idea where it came from or who produced it.
When you buy beef from the farmer down the road, eggs from somebody you know, blueberries from a local farm, or vegetables at your farmers market, you can actually ask questions. You know where your food came from. And your money stays in your own community.
Only 5 more Saturdays for the market!
