When you shop at farmers markets, this is who you support đź’š

Copley Market Managers Elena and Zoe got the chance to visit Foppema's Farm this week, where Farmer Jesse showed them around his lovely family-owned farm in Northbridge, MA! It was a delight to learn about the logistics of agricultural production in our state—the hard work these farm teams put in makes us want to work harder to support what they do, including getting you to the farmers market!

You can find fresh Foppema's Farm goods (like these tomatoes, corn, melons, alliums, flowers, and other produce!) at their farm store in Northbridge, or at Copley Square Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Fridays, 11am-6pm. We'll see you at the market!

From August 2 - 8, we celebrated National Farmers Market Week across Massachusetts. Farmers markets are pillars of local food systems. They connect community members with the abundance of locally grown products in Massachusetts, support small farmers, serve as community gathering spaces, and more.

Network manager, Emily Fidanza, attended the New Bedford Farmers Market where Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources Commissioner Ashley Randle and other state leaders were also visiting. Coastal Foodshed operates this market year round, with an indoor market in the Winter months. Today’s market featured live music, a cooking demonstration, and an abundance of local products.

Shout out to Mass Farmers Markets for their work supporting farmers markets across the state and for all the market managers, vendors, and visitors for contributing to vibrant local food systems!

What We're Reading 🥬
There's been a lot of discussion about whether or not farmers market produce is safer than that at the grocery store since the beginning of the US Cyclospora outbreak.

Though no one food system can eradicate 100% of food safety risk, we believe there are so many reasons to visit the farmers market this season, including:
- the ability to ask your farmers about their produce and processing directly
- the less travel and processing produce goes through, the lower the chance of potential contamination
- locally grown food provides traceability that is much more difficult to achieve for industrial agricultural systems
- your local farmers are feeding both themselves and their communities with their produce, meaning they have a direct vested interest in making sure that food is safe and delicious!

Happy HIP $100M! 🎉🎊

We’re incredibly proud to share this first in the nation milestone—this summer sees $100 million in HIP benefits earned! Launched in April 2017, HIP provides $40, $60, or $80 per month for SNAP recipients to buy fresh produce at farmers markets and farm stands. That's $100 million that supports local farmers while ensuring Massachusetts families have access to fresh nutritious produce!

What this means:
- $100 million spent directly with farmers
- Over 233,000 Massachusetts households facing food insecurity enjoying fresh local food
- Healthy eating reduces the $2.4 billion spent on avoidable healthcare
- More than 300 farms have been able to continue contributing to the local economy!

For more information on HIP and how to apply for SNAP, visit the link below to see how it works and how to apply for benefits. Happy HIP $100M!
