This is a really good program by our local County Extension person, Julie. If you missed her at a few weeks ago, come to the Fontana Library this evening to learn how to garden in spite of the DEER and our other local creatures!

My first Czech Christmas Bread (houska)!

Called vanocka in the modern Czech Republic, our family used the earlier name of houska. The directions and photos in Kristyna Koutna’s book helped make my baking experience a success! If you are of Czech/Bohemian descent but have no one to teach you the old recipes, Kristyna and Petra Kupska on have all the recipes, YouTube’s, and historical information to bring you back to your grandmothers’ kitchens (and they both live in the Czech Republic so you know they’re teaching you authentic traditional recipes). Petra has a great newsletter she started during Covid with her son so he wouldn’t lose his English language skills during lockdown. Love her soup recipes!

I’m sure my dad would say you should czech them out, but I’ll refrain from the dad jokes . . .

Emily has returned from her travels - back to drawing Terry’s caricatures (the other girls took up the cause while she was away - and even included me on some ❤️!). Emily brought me some beautiful cookies (pernic) from my ancestral home of Prague. Also, Fontana is just so beautifully lit up for the holidays! Please go for a ride and enjoy the decorations one evening, here on The Quiet Side of the Lake . . .

Did you see that moon early this morning? A gorgeous sight over the snowy pastures and icy pond.

Cows and cats were tucked in warm overnight, the cows come and go as they please. Terry built his usual winter straw “castle” for the barn cats . . .

It was a chilly zero when we woke up, here on The Quiet Side of the Lake

Veterans Day is not just a day off . . .

“Veterans Day has been a national holiday since 1954, when Congress designated it as a time to honor American veterans of all wars. It’s been observed longer than that, however, going back to 1938, when it was begun as Armistice Day to mark the end of the First World War on Nov. 11, 1918.
The group Veterans for Peace, and in particular its Wisconsin chapters, is seeking to restore that name, contending that the day was originally intended to commemorate the end of a war rather than those who engage in one.
“The original Armistice Day was a day to remember the awful horrors of World War I,” said Phil Anderson of Brule, a veteran with 20 years of service and a member of the Lake Superior Region Veterans for Peace.” ()

Thank you for your service
