Asparagus being pollinated. Asparagus makes a red berry attractive to birds. Birds help distribute seeds usually along fence rows. Then when your on your walk you find a nice Asparagus patch. Thank the birds and the bees!

Last week, I got to go to our local elementary school and teach kids about bees. I brought an observation hive so the kids could see the bees and the queen up close. They were completely fascinated. It made me happy to see them so mesmerized by the bees.

It was probably 27 years ago that I was their age, standing under a tree watching a beehive at work. Then the hive swarmed, and a beekeeper came and caught the bees. That was the moment I knew that someday I wanted to be a beekeeper.

Who knows — maybe one day one of these kids will become a great beekeeper too, all because someone came in, talked about bees, and let them taste some honey.

The Making of Queen Bees

First, I find a hive with traits I like. Then I inspect the combs and carefully remove 1-day-old larvae with a grafting tool. Next, I place them into little plastic cups. I repeat this process until I have the number I want.

After that, I take the cups filled with larvae and place them into my cell builder hive. There, the bees feed the larvae and draw out the wax to create queen cells. After 10 days in the cell builder, I remove the queen cells and place them into mating nucs. This is where the queens will hatch and eventually go out on mating flights.

Today, 5/15/26, is hatch day. Pray for good daytime weather, no predators picking them off, and that they find their way back home. 🤞
This is my first time getting queens to this stage.

When the queen isn't doing her job the workers say "Off with her head!"
