Thinking about selling homemade food at our market? Iowa’s cottage-food law makes it possible to sell many homemade, shelf-stable foods without obtaining a state food license or using a commercial kitchen.

✅ Foods generally allowed include:

• Cookies, brownies, breads and most cakes
• Candy and confections
• Granola, dry mixes and cereals
• Shelf-stable jams and jellies
• Dried herbs and seasonings
• Qualifying pickles and canned fruits or vegetables
• Whole, uncut fresh fruits and vegetables

⚠️ Foods that require refrigeration or temperature control generally need additional licensing. Examples include:

• Cheesecakes and cream pies
• Refrigerated salsa or dips
• Hot prepared meals
• Meat or poultry products
• Milk and dairy products

🏷️ COTTAGE-FOOD LABELS

Each packaged cottage-food product must include:

• The producer’s name and an address, phone number or email
• The name of the food
• Ingredients listed from greatest to least
• Any major food allergens
• The required Iowa cottage-food statement:

“This product was produced at a residential property that is exempt from state licensing and inspection.”

Home-canned pickles, fruits and vegetables have additional testing and labeling requirements. Every batch must meet Iowa’s acidity or water-activity standards, and the processing date must appear on the container.

The Wapello Farmers Market wants to help local bakers, gardeners, makers and aspiring entrepreneurs share their products safely and legally. If you are unsure whether your product qualifies, please ask us before market day. We will help point you in the right direction.
