Swamp milkweed is a native plant that is essential for supporting monarch butterflies, providing them with necessary nourishment & habitat. Its attractive flowers appeal to bees & butterflies, blossoming in shades like mauve, pink, reddish-violet & sometimes white, with nectar cups ideal for pollination. By fall, its seed pods open, releasing seeds with white tufts. Growing in sturdy clumps, swamp milkweed reaches heights of 4-5’ & features paired, lance-shaped leaves.

This low maintenance perennial is ideal for sunny borders, cottage gardens, pollinator gardens, & along the edges of ponds & streams. It is best to plant it in a permanent location because the deep taproots should be left undisturbed once the plant is established.

*Milkweed is slow to emerge from its dormancy so don't worry if it lags behind other perennials.*

These are located on the perennial tables outside the main greenhouse. We are open Mon-Fri 8-6 & Sat 8-5.

As spring comes near to the end & everyone is thinking about summer, we are already preparing for the fall. This week, Breanne is sowing her pumpkins, squash & gourd seeds. We are also planting the fall mums. All of these should be ready for your autumn decorations & favorite pumpkin & squash recipes. It seems like each year the seasons come & go by so quickly. We are so blessed in this area to be able to enjoy the different plants & vegetables that are available each season. From pansies & spring vegetables to all the summer favorites & ending with fall crops & mums. Plus, a bonus in this area, that favorite of many - homegrown bleached (trenched) celery which usually ends in January. Almost a full year of homegrown plants & edible delights!

The video you are about to see is how to trim a black raspberry bush, two years or older, before the harvest. First year trimming is less involved & you are going to selectively trim those to get rid of the canes laying on the ground & top them about knee-high. We hope you enjoy your raspberry harvest. If you didn't grow any of your own, we will be selling raspberries in a few weeks. We will keep you posted!

Sedum acre ‘Aurea’ is a bright, sun-loving groundcover that quickly carpets the soil in golden foliage & cheerful summer blooms. Its low profile & spreading nature make it ideal for softening edges, filling rock gardens, & covering difficult, dry areas.

This hardy perennial forms a dense mat of succulent foliage that shifts from green to buttery yellow depending on sunlight & season. In early to midsummer, clusters of tiny star-shaped yellow flowers rise just above the foliage, creating a vibrant, eye-catching display.

Well suited for dry slopes, gravel beds, & shallow soils, this sedum thrives where many plants struggle. It spreads steadily but remains shallow-rooted & easy to manage, making it a practical & versatile landscape solution.

Uses: Groundcovers, rock gardens, edging pathways, retaining walls, planter boxes, hanging baskets, green roofs.
USDA Hardiness Zones: 3–9
Sun: Full Sun
Life Cycle: Hardy Perennial
Mature Height: 2–3 inches
Mature Width: 8–12 inches
Bloom Season: Summer

Small-space gardeners who have shied away from taller Bee Balms will delight in Monarda Bee-You® Bee Happy™, a compact, mildew-resistant variety that forms a tidy clump at the edge of the border or in containers. Plants are covered in summer with cherry-red, chocolate-centered blooms that are a feeding station for pollinators & hummingbirds. The flowers are carried on upright stems over fragrant foliage that releases herbal scents of Mint & Basil when cut or crushed.
Monarda is a North American genus that has several species, all of which share tartly fragrant foliage & square stems that typify members of the Mint family. The flower heads are hemispheres of tubular blooms in brilliant colors that present a feast of nectar for pollinators including bees, butterflies & hummingbirds in mid-to-late summer. This perennial thrives in full sun or partial shade & evenly moist soil.

Find this out on the perennial tables outside the main greenhouse.
