As Washington prepares to observe Juneteenth, Historic Eastern Market will remain open regular hours.

Visit the South Hall merchants for fresh foods, flowers, specialty products, and local favorites. On Tuesdays, enjoy the Eastern Market Farmers Market featuring regional growers and seasonal produce. Bowers Fancy Dairy Products is proud to participate in America at the Table, part of the citywide Eat250 celebration honoring America’s 250th anniversary through food, culture, history, and community.

A wonderful visit today with Moses Holloway, a familiar and respected face to so many in Washington through his decades of service at the historic Willard Hotel. Moses first began his career at the Willard in 1986, the same year the legendary hotel reopened following its celebrated restoration.

Moses first discovered Eastern Market a few years before the 2007 fire, and through all the years since, his friendship and loyal patronage have meant a great deal to all of us at Bowers Fancy Dairy Products.

Eastern Market has always represented far more than commerce — it is a place built on people, relationships, stories, and the generations who continue to keep these traditions alive. We are deeply grateful for customers like Moses, whose support has sustained not only our small business, but also the enduring spirit of the market itself.

As a small historical note, when the Willard reopened in August 1986, a young and rising talent in Washington’s culinary scene, Chef Jeff Buben, worked at the hotel’s famed Occidental restaurant and would later become its executive chef. Contemporary accounts from that era described him as an emerging force behind the Occidental’s growing reputation during the Willard’s renewed chapter. While I am uncertain of the full extent of their relationship, my father, Ray Bowers, held Chef Buben in particularly high regard and maintained a longstanding culinary friendship with him.

Thank you, Moses, for your kindness, loyalty, and many years of support. People like you are part of what makes both Eastern Market and Washington so special.

🇺🇸 Last week at Bowers Fancy Dairy Products, members of the Georgia National Guard paused for a few moments to watch Mark open a beautiful wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano Grand Oro.

For a brief moment, the market slowed down — the crack of the wheel opening, the aroma of the cheese, and the shared curiosity that makes places like Eastern Market feel timeless.

Many of these young men and women come from small towns across Georgia and America, communities where craftsmanship, service, family businesses, and neighborly connection still mean something deeply personal, much as it does here at Eastern Market. It was an honor to welcome them to Capitol Hill and share a small piece of market life with them.

Above the South Hall, Eastern Market’s second-story Market Master’s office was designed as an elevated operations office, not a decorative afterthought. From this position, the Market Master could oversee the interior food hall, vendor stalls, customer circulation, sanitation, and observe the busy 7th Street SE farmers’ line operating outside the building.

The office also connects Eastern Market to its predecessor, the Eastern Branch Market. In 1873, William Hughes — formerly Clerk of the Eastern Branch Market — became the first Market Master of the new Eastern Market. His appointment carried the old market’s administrative role into Adolf Cluss’s new, purpose-built public market building.

The Market Master’s responsibilities were practical and constant: inspecting goods, enforcing market regulations, settling disputes, monitoring weights and measures, and ensuring the market remained orderly and sanitary. The elevated second-story office provided a direct line of sight into both the South Hall and the surrounding outdoor market activity along 7th Street SE.

In this compact upstairs office, Eastern Market’s architecture and operations came together — public health, food distribution, commerce, regulation, and neighborhood life all managed from above the market floor.
