Our Grandpa's Farmed

Our Grandpa's Farmed April 5 2026 , begins my garden/farm Diary for this year. The first sentence will say if it's urban, suburb, ex urb or a for real farm.

Hope people ask questions or add insights. Not a pro... but Grandpa... farmed

I dont know if it is fully evident from these pictures... but I used the flail mower on the BCS... to knock down all the w**ds in this garden... in about 3 hrs... Wednesday afternoon. I cut all the grass between the beds...
Cut the w**ds that were in the beds..

Im debating on doing a light till across the tops of the beds... to bury the w**d seeds and the broken up roots so... the seeds that I plant... have a better chance of out growing the w**ds.
Also thinking about tilling or plowing under the grass between the beds...
Also to slow that growth down... to keep the w**ds in the walkways from trying to spread into the bed.

I went to Culpepper last week...mainly to work on water collection and forgot to take pictures of that...
Going back tomorrow I think... so I'll document the collection side...
Still sorting out how I will actually manage watering the plants
Having said that... whats growing looks awesome

The BCS... the Cadillac...
Well... its made by Ferrari...
The same folks that make the super cars...
They make tractors too...

BCS will cost 3 to 20 times what the Horse cost and from what I hear... they went up 40% this year... and thats if you can find one.
All of them are imported from Italy.

But they run smooth. They till deeper than the horse.. it tills about 6" wider than the horse...
With the selection of implements that you can get for it... you can run a 2 -3 acre farm... if you have a bit of time.
If you can find a used BCS it is worth the investment.

But. If your are working more than a handful of small beds... Do Not get a smaller model. If you have really hard ground... get a larger model. Its the weight the makes it easier for your back and shoulders...

This! Is a Troybuilt Horse. I think they also made a Pony and a Bronco. IF... If you find a Horse that was made before MTD bought Troybuilt... so it would have a serial number before the year 2000...
This is best compromise in an affordable tiller... that won't totally wear you out while using it.
Why?
Because the gear box is made of Xast Iron the thing weighs like 400lbs.
As you can see in the video it doesn't bounce around all over the place.
IF your 1st breaking ground with it... it is going to buck a little bit... but nowhere near as much as any tiller made out of steel from the last 25 years.

You can find them as cheap as $300 and if it runs... it runs.
If you can find the chipper shredder that connects to it... its more than worth it.
If you find one that doesn't quite run... its worth it to put a harbor freight or Honda engine on it.
