Don't be afraid to ask for something if you don't see it on the menu. In 1983 Nick Iannone cut meat at a chain grocery store and his wife, Ann, worked at Colonial Bank in the proofing department. The couple decided to set Ann up with a little coffee shop in the south end of Waterbury. The couple had five sons; Mark, Dave, Jim, Joe and Nick, and one daughter, Diane. The Iannones decided the store w

ould be a great way to keep the three youngest boys busy. The boys helped Ann in the store before and after school and the business grew to the point that Nick could leave his job at the Country Grocer in Thomaston and join his wife. In 1986 the boys were heading off to college and Dave quit his job selling insurance and joined the family business. “It was our neighborhood,” Dave said. “We went to school there, we delivered newspapers to the neighborhood. We knew everybody.”

The first store was 600 square feet and customers would wait in line, often out the door, to get a sandwich or grinder from the deli. Eventually the business grew so much that the Iannones moved across the street and set up shop in a 2000 square foot facility. Dave runs Ann’s Deli now, but his mother and father are still an integral part of the business. Ann still comes down once a week to make her special eggplant, and Nick comes down everyday.
