Things are getting exciting for a new farmer. Doug just planted the first corn last night. Now it's my job gonna spray for w**ds sorry guys haven't figured out how to grow without w**d spray yet. I'm working on it but I'm not there yet. The cultivation of witch grass really raised hell with it Fingers crossed I may get closer to solving the problem. My brother told me he and dad fought it for years in fact if the pilgrims were here they fought it also. Witch grass has been winning this fight for a long time we
Will have to see. Anyways time will tell.

Well the fertilizer is here along with herbicide. And the cultivar surely raised hell with the perennial grasses. If all goes well the first corn will go in tomorrow the spray will go on shortly after that. And let's hope it works if not there are other options which I will take but let's hope for the best.

Well my cubcadet has gone in for a weeks Beauty at the tom spa across the street. Besides the usual check fluids and filters the undercarriage is checked as well as a questionable starter. But the most exciting is a new hood so I will no longer be reminded of running into that maple tree on that cold winter day when the throttle stuck. Cubby as I call her has been an important piece of equipment on the farm and certainly deserves this trip to the repair shop. When it's done all tractors will be fixed up after a long season of neglect when money was tight. Its really a relief to
Have it all fixed.

Well corn season started today and like every other year I look over a huge patch of crabgrass on the first corn block and think of those years ago when dad told me I'd never kill that. I remember thinking you silly man of coarse ill do it I have all the modern sprays at my fingertips I'll get it easy. Well here I am still looking at a large patch of crabgrass. I have discovered that if you spray it it will pretend to diefor a while but by next year it's back bigger and stronger than ever. The dam w**d is relentless. So a new addition to the battle has been added or I should say an old technique to the fight. I cut my old buckeye cultivator out of the sumac
Patch and attacked it today. Was able to pull it out in clods and break it up hopefully enough to die especially when my other techniques are used. So after many years maybe I will make progress on dad's hated crabgrass if not there is always next year.

Was just thinking about last years projects, the chicken house was not wet all winter. We put a French drain in on the north side of the greenhouse also a gravel drive so grain could be delivered directly to the chicken pen. What a treat that is as I'm ordering 40to50 bags of grain at a time. We also put in a rock ford across the run so I wouldn't have to compact the soil running up the field. I originally looked at getting help from the Nscrs for money that didn't turn out successfully as they pretty much had me signing a contract allowing them to oversee the running of all cornfields forever what would have been a 5000.00$ project. The things they wanted me to do I considered to be dangerous with no visible environmental gain's so i opted out. The information they offered was very late and not helpful so I did it on my own and I'm glad I did. Sometimes free government money is not worth the price the want you to pay. Life is good this spring so far. A little warmth and it will be perfect. Thanks for the money dad
