🧵❤️ Why Does Handmade Cost What It Does?
With the holidays approaching, I thought this would be a wonderful time to talk about something that often gets overlooked when shopping for handmade gifts: the true cost of creating something by hand.
Let’s use my Ohio Star quilt as an example! 🪡
This quilt was lovingly pieced together, professionally long-arm quilted, and finished with hand-sewn binding. It’s something I’m incredibly proud of, and I’ve priced it at $325.
But let’s break down what actually goes into that price!
🧵 Fabric for the quilt top: $40
🪡 Professional long-arm quilting, including batting and backing: $130
⏰ My time cutting, piecing, sewing, and binding: Approximately 14 hours
💰 Total material and quilting expenses: $170
That leaves $155 for 14 hours of work, or approximately $11.07 an hour.
And that’s BEFORE accounting for thread, equipment, electricity, sewing machine maintenance, and all those little expenses that come with creating something by hand!
Now, I’m certainly not sharing this to complain. I genuinely LOVE quilting! ❤️ There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking pieces of fabric and turning them into something beautiful, useful, and lasting.
But I do think it’s important to understand what goes into handmade items.
When you walk into a big-box store, you’re purchasing something that has often been mass-produced by machines and assembled as efficiently as possible.
When you purchase handmade, you’re paying for someone’s time, skill, creativity, patience, and attention to detail.
You’re paying for the hours spent cutting fabric, matching seams, correcting mistakes, and making sure the finished product is something worth being proud of.
And in the case of a quilt, you’re purchasing something that can be loved, used, passed down, and treasured for generations.
🎄 So as we head into the holiday shopping season, I want to encourage you to consider handmade gifts!
Not because everyone needs to spend hundreds of dollars on a quilt, but because handmade comes in ALL shapes, sizes, and price ranges.
And when you see the price tag on something handmade, remember that there’s often a whole lot more behind that number than you might realize.
Handmade isn’t necessarily expensive. It’s simply not mass-produced. ❤️
Support your local makers. Appreciate their craftsmanship. And remember that when someone creates something with their own two hands, a little piece of their time and heart goes into it.
