Our first time grafting was a success!! Watermelon going in the ground on the next cloudy day!

Hello All!!

We are alive and well here on the farm. We have been super busy. Want a rundown??

We have been working with our “new” Italian hives. We harvested 1 frame (yes, ONE frame) and got 7 jars of honey.

We have been figuring out a plan going forward to battle the root knot nematodes. So we have been laying down white plastic in the rows to plant into. This will cool the soil.

We have been grafting watermelon, mini cantaloupe (Tasty Bites) and tomatoes! We chose rootstocks with natural RKN resistance and scions with delicious flavor.

We paused on the farm stand due to the RKN discovery and decided to devote all of our energy into plastic and grafting for the upcoming season.

The good news is we will have tomatoes, cantaloupe and watermelon for the LL
Market starting in October!

Miss Lydia got to try her hand at beekeeping today! She came in giddy and bouncing. She told me “MOM! Dad let me hold a FRAME WITH BEES ON IT!!”

They harvested 10 pounds of honey because they *had* to. Italian bees are amazing.

We have been a little MIA here lately! So here is a farm update!

We found symptoms of “root knot nematode” in several of the plants. Our farm was used for horse pasture before we bought it so it’s not surprising. So we had to make a plan for the year: what to plant that is either resistant, immune or able to be grafted onto a rootstock that is resistant or immune.

As of right now, we have cherry tomatoes.
Our beans, peas, and strawberries are done either due to heat or nematode pressure.

*Soon* we will have slicer tomatoes AND mini cantaloupe melons.

Coming soon! Mini watermelon! Those we need to graft so it will be a sec.
