Guess who is finally laying?!

Those of you who know our farm know the story behind our guinea.
We purchased our flock back in 2020 from a Vermonter who had been breeding them for 40 years! She was an amazing breeder and was very well versed in guinea fowl genetics and care.
She taught me so much about them, and how amazing and crazy these birds are. I’m eternally grateful for her wisdom and guidance. 🙏I treasure the knowledge and insight those before me share, they are really the true “breeders” and mentors, without them these birds, and many others would be forgotten. Thank you to all my mentors you are truly amazing. askthechickendoctor stellargamebirds foodanimalconcernstrust

Last night I lost my beautiful girl, Spec.

She wasn’t just another bird in the flock—she was one I chose with intention. A micro Serama I had been raising and training for the past year to become a therapy chicken. She had the awareness, the personality, and that quiet connection you can’t force. She was becoming family.

For those who don’t know, Seramas are already one of the smallest chicken breeds in the world—and a micro is even more delicate. Tiny bodies, tiny systems. Spec didn’t lay eggs, but that was never her purpose.

She was healthy. She was loved. She was special.

Last night, she passed from what appears to be aspiration. Something as simple as drinking water can become complicated for birds like this. I had seen her struggle occasionally after drinking, but like so many things with chickens—it can go from manageable to final faster than you expect.

That’s the part people don’t always understand.

Chickens—especially fragile breeds—can be incredibly vulnerable. You can do everything right, watch them closely, give them the best care… and still lose them. It’s part of working with animals that don’t have much margin for error.

And it doesn’t make it easier.

Spec was one of those birds that reminded me why I do this work. Not just raising chickens—but helping people understand them, care for them, and connect with them in a real way.

Because they’re not disposable.
They’re not “just chickens.”

They’re individuals.

And yeah… it’s always the ones you name. Sugar Feather Farm

This is what starting right looks like.👍

Before getting birds, we walked through setup, expectations, and the best fit—and Coturnix quail was the clear choice for this budding quail keeper!

Now everything is in place, and hatch day is just around the corner.

This is exactly why I offer Fowl Guru consults—so you don’t guess, waste time, or learn the hard way.

Whether you’re brand new, starting with your kids, or refining your setup, I’ll help you build it correctly from day one. Let’s chat! ❤️

A Simple Guide from Sugar Feather Farm If you’re shopping for blue-egg chickens, it’s easy to think this: “Blue egg chicken = blue eggs every time.” We wish it were that simple. But egg color has a little personality—and sometimes a memory. At Sugar Feather Farm, we raise Ameraucanas, Crea...

I want to share something gently and thoughtfully. ❤️

In the last two photos, this setup doesn’t align with how I personally believe birds should be housed or cared for. I’m not here to call out or criticize any breeder or farm — only to speak to what feels right to me.

On our farm, we prioritize space, daily care, and environments that allow birds to simply be birds. We do our very best to give them calm, attentive care and a life rooted in respect and intention.

There are many ways to raise birds, and this is the one we choose — with love, patience, and responsibility at the center of everything we do.🪶🐔

The struggle is real, y’all.
I’ll be honest… I really dislike social media. I’d much rather be in the barns, cuddling birds, checking brooders, hatching babies, or dealing with whatever chaos the birds decide to throw at me that day.

But here we are — because if I don’t show up on here, my business disappears into the void. Farming already demands every ounce of time and energy, and somehow we’re also supposed to be content creators, marketers, customer service, photographers, videographers, and “online personalities.”

It’s a lot.
It’s exhausting.
And most days, I’m just popping on to check messages between chores… while trying not to drop my phone in a waterer.

So how do we balance it?
We don’t, really. We just do our best.
Some days you get a post. Some days you get a pile of feathers and silence. Farming isn’t staged — it’s real, raw, and unpredictable.

But I do appreciate every person who follows along, orders from our small farm, or supports what we do here. Your engagement genuinely keeps this place running, even when the algorithms don’t.

Here’s to all the farmers juggling chores with “content creation.”
You’re not alone — and neither am I. 🪶🤦‍♀️💛

Vermont weather keeps us guessing—90° one day, storming the next! These wild shifts aren’t easy on our birds, but we’re always preparing to keep them safe, happy, and healthy.

Here’s a peek into our farming practices:
✨ Our chickens get the best of both worlds—indoors for shelter, outdoors for foraging.
✨ They’re fed premium, balanced nutrition.
