We often hear comments from the consumers who are tired of not knowing where the produce came from and we are working on making that change. The consumer wants to know their farmer. It doesn’t take long to shop in the produce aisle to realize what distance your produce has traveled. People from the Ozarks grew up eating fresh fruits and vegetables from their own gardens and now want the same whole
some produce for their own families. They just need options. Regional Ozark farmers are beginning to realize this need and are starting to grow produce in order to support the demand for locally grown produce in the Ozarks. This economic activity has two benefits for the region and the local community. It provides families with locally grown produce that is in season and with a variety of local options. It also provides the farmer with a way to make a living on his farm and the farmer the opportunity to grow sustainably in an environmentally friendly and healthy way. Ozark Farmer’s Co-op is committed to growing 25,000 tomato plants in 2014, and if all goes well, this will provide 240,000 pounds of tomatoes to consumers. It will be marketed through Pyramid Foods, a locally owned grocery chain which is headquartered out of Rogersville, Mo., which supplies over 50 stores throughout the Ozark region. The co-op also has its own produce label, ensuring confidence to the consumer that their food dollar just went to support their local farmers and economy. So as you can see, the groundwork for supplying area residents with the fresh food and locally grown options has been laid. Producer membership for the co-op continues to grow and many organizations and government entities are continuing to invest and are helping us to grow. The co-op continually tries to educate and coordinate with growers through ongoing meetings, seminars, and workshops. University of Missouri Extension and the Natural Resource Conservation Service have been invaluable organizations in helping with technical advice for our growers as well as participating in many of our educational programs.
