Participatory budgeting (PB) is a democratic process where community members directly decide how to spend a portion of a public budget. It empowers residents to brainstorm, develop, and vote on local projects—such as infrastructure improvements or park upgrades—fostering transparency, equity, and increased civic engagement.

What an exciting day! 🐔🌱
We proudly hosted our 5th Urban Farming Workshop, focusing on raising livestock right here in the City of Trenton.
A huge thank you to Councilwoman Crystal Feliciano for providing us with the city livestock infromation we were able to breaking down the local ordinance and help our community understand what it means to responsibly raise chickens in the city. Knowledge like this is how we turn ideas into action.
Thank you as well to our community partners Cross Community Inc., our incredible facilitator Tomia McQueen, owner of Wildflower Farm in Hopewell, NJ, and of course our dedicated cohort and our sponsor Outdoor Equity Alliance (OEA) for continuing to invest in this work.
This week, we learned the ins and outs of raising chickens—from daily care to long-term responsibility. More importantly, we talked about why it matters:
➡️ Sustainability – reducing reliance on outside food systems➡️ Food Ownership – having direct access to fresh, healthy eggs➡️ Community Power – building systems that work for us, by us
Quick takeaway from Article 3 (City Ordinance on Birds):Residents are allowed to keep a limited number of chickens for personal use, as long as they are properly housed, maintained, and do not create a nuisance to neighbors. The focus is on cleanliness, safety, and responsible ownership—ensuring that urban livestock supports the community, not harms it.
We’re not just learning how to raise chickens—we’re learning how to take control of our food system.
