Today we said a very teary “see you later” to our farm stand manager and honorary Golonka family member Sophie Leone, who is heading out for her senior year of college, where she is a record setting pole vaulter and stellar student.

Sophie has been Golonka Farm’s “unicorn” for the past five years. With each successive season, she has taken more initiative and responsibility, and has demonstrated endless capacity to learn new skills. She’s shown up early, stayed late, paid attention to details, and poured her heart into our farm. And most of all, she has led from the front and contributed strongly to the culture of our farm stand team, who all care about their work, and are curious, kind, eager to help each other, and show up with professionalism every day. We are so proud of each and every one of them.

We know that wherever life takes her, Sophie will have great success. But we can’t begin to express how much we already miss having her here with us!

Golonka Farm is a beloved institution in Whately, famous locally for growing a wide variety of vegetables, for their fresh-picked sweet corn, and for the friendly, familiar faces that greet customers at their farm stand. The mission at Golonka Farm is straightforward: “We want people to come to our farmstand and feel welcome and safe,” says co-owner Jan Golonka. Her husband and business partner Jim Golonka adds, “We want to offer a good quality product at an affordable price.”

In April, Golonka Farm was recognized with a Local Hero Award, an annual commendation awarded by CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture) for notable accomplishments in support of our local food system. The Golonkas received the award “for decades of hard work, for reliably serving as a source of great fresh food and community connection, and for careful planning for the future of the farm.”
