Anyone else ready for some fried green tomatoes??

These are my favorite from a LA restaurant…. (Lower Alabama). My mother in-law collected cook books.. although I swear she didn’t need one, she would tastes something and then tell you what all was in it, go home, and whip it up.. but she loved to read, and she had piles and piles and shelves and shelves of cookbooks from all over.. we always knew we could get a cookbook from where ever we were traveling to or from and she would be tickled with the gift..

Well, this was one of her cookbooks from one of the many trips to Gulf shores that she took with the gang she called family! And these fried green tomatoes are sooo goood!!!

So come on you tomatoes…. Keep pushing those blooms out, I’m ready to bust out the frying pan! How about you?!

Let’s talk soil health…. The nerd in me, and the former extension worker in me geeks out over this stuff..

So last fall, I clean the overgrowth, weeds, crops out and tilled.. then I put down 2 large totes of worm castings, and worked them in and went and grabbed some old silage tarps that had been tossed aside from the silage pile on the other side of the farm.. and covered what I could to put the garden to bed for the winter.. I didn’t have enough to cover the entire space so I knew it would be a good experiment.. the idea is to smother weeds, to keep the ground covered to prevent erosion.

Yesterday I started uncovering what I was gonna use this week.. and the difference was noticeable! First off, my entire garden is full of earthworms, it’s definitely living!! But the covered part definitely was busy! Take a look at these pictures.. next fall I’ll be looking to cover the entire space!!

What the signal is HEALTHY soil, full of nutrients, rich with organic matter, and lots of oxygen being worked into the soil by these tiny little workers.. I don’t add much fertilizer after things get to rocking, so it’s important that I adjust now! I do put down an all purpose, slow release fertilizer between crops but other than that I rely on what I do in the off season..

So there’s the dirt…. On the outside garden..

Take care..

On the agenda today…. šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸŒ¾šŸ’ƒ

Green beans are going in the ground..

Yes I know it’s early, yes I know there’s still a risk of frost even though it was 90° yesterday.. but….. here’s the deal, I ALWAYS plant a row early.. I call it my sacrificial crop, some years it costs me.. but MOST years I end up with early beans.. it’s one row, not an entire field.. worth the risk for me..

What variety?? 🫘

My go-to the past several years have been Jade, they are a long round bean, on a bush.. they are crisp, sweet, produce a lot of beans, are wonderful fresh, and the can beautifully! In fact I’m down to 4 jars left…. Hence the push to get more in the ground.. šŸ˜‰

Those of you who grow green beans, what is your favorite variety???

Those of you that have signed up for the produce boxes, be looking for an email in the next couple of days with some follow-up questions..

Im looking forward to growing lots of good stuff for all of you!!

🌺🌺Produce Box weekly subscription:🌺🌺

I’m looking to start the produce boxes with fresh greens mid-April pending weather and crops growing. Then I’ll add crops to the boxes as produce starts to grow. With everything in full swing by June..

The early prices will vary depending on the variety I have for the bundles. By June when everything is producing they will be in the $20-$30 range. I’m still working on pricing

I’m working on a website that will allow you to customize your boxes each week.

I will also have 🄩 beef, blackberries, when in season, apples, and I’m working on honey and eggs. And I’m also planning on at least one trip to pick up Rocky Ford cantaloupe for you guys, I’ll also have flowers available if you’ve a hankering for some posies! šŸ’

šŸ“ Everything will be labeled as to what farm they come from when I’m not able to produce them.

āļø So what I need from you is your email address, you can PM me if you don’t want to put it on this post. I promise you won’t get more than two emails a week.. most likely only one to tel you what’s available for the week.

🚐 Pick up and deliveries will depend on where the majority of the customers are at.. but we will get all that figured out soon.
