Ever wonder how we keep our crops alive through these wild temperature swings? Let’s talk row covers!

Our high tunnel might look like a greenhouse, but it’s actually unheated. Its main job is to block the wind and protect plants from drying out—not to keep them warm. That’s where row covers come in.

Row covers are like cozy blankets for our plants. Most of what’s growing in the tunnel right now was planted last fall, giving the crops time to establish strong roots before winter set in. When temperatures drop below freezing, we tuck them in under these covers to help hold in just enough warmth to get them through the night.

But it’s not as simple as “set it and forget it.” On sunny days, the covers have to come off so the plants can get the light they need. That means a daily routine of covering and uncovering—definitely a labor of love this time of year!

I had just removed the row covers from the tunnel, thinking we were in the clear… and then this cold spell rolled in. So back into the tunnel they went yesterday!

Now we wait and hope those extra layers did their job and our plants are still hanging on. Farming sure keeps us humble—and always watching the weather 🌱

So what do farmers do all winter? 🤔
Keep busy — that’s for sure!

Today’s project: testing my Jang Seeder (a high-precision push seeder). I’m dialing in the exact settings needed for different types of seeds. And yes… this setup is jury-rigged in my dining room so I don’t have to freeze my fingers in the workshop. 🌱😂

Behind-the-scenes work like this is how we stay on task and get ready to bring you fresh, beautiful produce next season.

Stay warm, friends — spring will be here before we know it! ❄️➡️🌞

❄️ Season Closing Announcement ❄️

Old Man Winter has officially won this round! With these freezing temperatures, it’s just too cold to keep produce in our market — everything is starting to freeze up!

📍 Blue Barn Farm Market is now closed for the season.

The good news? You can still enjoy many of our products all winter long through blair_markets online.

We’ll be back in the spring when our lettuces and greens are up, growing, and ready to welcome warmer days 🌱

Until then, thank you for another wonderful season of supporting local food and our farm. Stay warm, stay safe, and we’ll see you again this spring! 💚
