in the snow. This group of steers are on their final pieces of pasture. 2 days left...in theory. The orchardgrass is still very green and tender, stockpiled under the snow. The beef love it and look forward to each daily move as if it is the spring flush. The worst part is this field doesn't have frost free water. Stretching 400 feet of garden hose thru the snow and winding it back up is no fun.

Last night we went back out after dark and sorted out some more that were in the wrong field. Can you spot them?

The heritage turkey is a slower growing, more athletic bird. They can still fly pretty good (for a turkey) and have a diehard instinct to perch as high as they can.

In this case, they are perching 10 ft off the ground on top of the water rig for our market (broad breasted bronze) turkeys. Seems harmless until the morning when you see how much manure they drop into the waterers, creating a sanitation issue.

You think you've got some alone time. Just the mini ho, some brass fittings, and a cold ditch of muddy water. And then 500 turkeys have to come mock you and take your thread tape. Thanksgiving can't come soon enough.

. This spring I had a surprise - Most of my heifers are bred. I don't have a bull - or didn't think I did - so who is the daddy? We are expecting 19 more. This little bull calf hit the ground running with tons of energy.

. Farming happens when it happens. This Sunday morning is a cool 24 degrees, giving me the opportunity to frost seed some freshly worked ground for cover crops that will be worked into the soil as green manure later in the summer.

The soil freezes and heaves, opening up the ground for seeds. When it thaws and retracts, it covers the seed. We have a few more freezing nights ahead that should repeat this process and help this clover and rye get covered and hopefully established.

Oh darn, I forgot collated nails, 21 degree. Just an average Friday shopping list on this farm.

I am going to guess that one hurt to get out. To be fair, it is technically a egg, which are usually a tad larger than chicken eggs, but this might be a record. I should save it for the county fair. It is blue ribbon worthy.
