Before food became something wrapped in plastic and forgotten about by the next day, there was s***e. This wasn't fancy food. It wasn't meant to be.
Across Europe, butchers and families preserved meat with vinegar, seasoning, patience, and hard-earned knowledge. Those traditions crossed an ocean with the people who carried them.
Eventually, they found a home here in the South.
And like so many foods that survive for generations, s***e became more than a recipe. It became a connection to family, to a place, and to the people who came before us.
For more than 50 years, we've been making s***e at T.L. Herring. Not because it's trendy. Not because it's fashionable. Because it matters.
Every slice tells a story that started centuries ago in Europe and found its way to Eastern North Carolina. Some people see s***e and think it's old-fashioned. We see it as history you can still taste. You can find our s***e at Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, or you can stop by our facility and walk in!
