The Wooden Crate

The Wooden Crate By the time I was born, Biggy, my grandfather was nearing retirement, and he no longer kept cows, chickens or pigs on his farm in Leyden, MA.

But he grew, and did he ever grow, the crispest carrots, sweetly tasting of the earth, tomatoes (we ate them like apples), peas, eggplant, zucchini (I concealed mine in milk). What he didn’t produce on the family land, he bartered with neighbors, who were among the first to build organic farms (who had heard of that?). I didn’t know it then, but I was closer to the source my food than I would be f

or a long time. Moving back to the New England to raise my two kids, I yearned for that connection to food. I looked around – the farms that I knew as a kid in Western Mass, and many more that I’ve since discovered, are still producing fresh, healthy food. But how could I access it more regularly than summer’s weekly markets? It only made sense if others were interested, too. So I asked my neighbors, my sister, and friends what they thought. In no time, I was making the rounds, loading up farm fresh food in the morning, and delivering to just about anyone who would accept it. Soon, they told their friends, who told their friends and The Wooden Crate grew, practically from the earth.

Every once in a while I have to run errands. This is pretty much a big deal because I’m possibly the world’s biggest fan of delivery services. The other day I was driving through Lexington and I remembered that the printer had more recipe cards for The Wooden Crate.
