B & D Ranch Natural Beef Triple Crown Steak Challenge Reserve Champion
Northwest Kansas Agribusiness of the year

06/04/2026

Cut from the shoulder, flat iron steak is the second most tender cut of beef behind tenderloin. It boasts beefy flavor and intricate marbling in a lean presentation and is equally delicious grilled or pan seared over high heat. Try this luxurious cut over a salad or on a sandwich.

We are pleased to announce that our ribeye earned the title of Reserve Champion in the prestigious Triple Crown Steak Challenge.

The only beef quality competition of its kind, Triple Crown judging uses objective data collection from carcass grading cameras, fatty acid profile analysis, shear force testing for tenderness, and a professional taste panel.

With several individual category wins, including both the most abundant and the most desirable type of marbling, our steak also exhibited the lowest melting point of all Angus entries, a trait directly correlated with higher levels of healthy unsaturated fats.

We are proud to produce unapologetically luxurious Red Angus beef — this recognition is especially meaningful, as our customers enjoy the same quality product with every purchase.

Congratulations to every participant with the curiosity and passion to market exceptional beef, and thank you to the generous event sponsors and competition founder Desi Cicali for promoting transparency and rewarding merit in our industry.

When folks ask about the origin of our IX cattle brand, we tell them it is steeped in history and represents tenacity, resilience and a commitment to doing things right. It isn’t just a brand, it represents the unique and progressive mindset of the man who cherished it. His extraordinary values, including compassion and diligence, are the very foundation upon which our operation is built.

George Howard (Hully) Newcom was born in Butler Co., Kansas before the turn of the 20th century. He was a sharpshooter, a surviving member of The Lost Battalion and a humble war hero. It was only after his death in 1977 that Jack discovered Newcom had saved countless soldiers’ lives during the war. Newcom was also a county sheriff and Democratic state senator; but above all, a dedicated cattleman. He called the Devil’s Claw Ranch, which is east of Russell Springs along the Smokey Hill River, home.

Newcom was old-fashioned, yet ahead of his time. He was a man of few words, but when he spoke, you listened. His profound “Newcomisms” around cows, money, and women still ring true today.

Unconcerned with convention, Newcom delighted in keeping a pot of chili on the stove year round, topping it off as needed with additional ingredients every couple days. That soup helped forge an unlikely relationship between an old rancher and a young cowboy.

Hully Newcom was many things to Jack — boss, mentor, and friend — and we are beyond grateful that he entrusted his coveted and beloved IX brand to us. We strive every day to uphold his values, and are so humbled and honored our girls wear his IX on their left side.

Big Mom’s second little peanut was the middle sister for most of her years, and like the stereotype, Pea 2 is reserved and amiable while confident of her purpose. With a propensity for twins, this chip off the old block is robust and fiercely maternal like her familiar females, whom she adores.

Peanut is the spitting image of her dam, Big Mom. A mahogany-colored chip off the old block, she’s big and assertive but incredibly nurturing, rivaling her mother’s super cow status. The first of four daughters from our favorite maternal line, Pea enjoys head scratches, bread slices, and collecting unsupervised calves; and, most of all, showing off her calf each year, there’s only one caveat—look, but don’t touch!
