Mad River Market

Mad River Market Organizing toward a community-based, cooperatively-owned grocery store in downtown Winsted serving the Northwest Hills. Winsted. Barkhamsted. Torrington.

We exist to create a regional Food Co-op where everyone can shop and anyone can be an owner, providing food and groceries from local farms and suppliers for all, nurturing social and economic wellbeing in a democratic and environmentally sensitive manner. At the July 18, 2026 meeting of Mad River Market, the member/owners unanimously voted to dissolve the corporation and distribute the remaining assets to The Open Door kitchen in Winsted, CT to benefit local residents.
As one member/owner commented, "It was a worthwhile effort".
