After the winter cover crop is cut, the fields don’t stay empty for long.

As soon as harvest wraps up, it’s time to start planting the next crop. Planters and drills are rolling almost immediately, and manure from the pits is spread back onto the freshly planted ground to return nutrients to the soil.

This year’s custom mix includes cow peas, a variety of beans, forage sorghum, vetch, peanuts, sorghum sudan, sunn h**p, and sunflowers — all selected to help build soil health and produce quality forage for the cows. Diversity in species is where the nutrient density and the flavor in the milk comes from.

While the dump truck gets parked until fall, the rest of the equipment keeps moving. Farming seasons may change, but the work rarely slows down. 🌱

A few late nights, a few neighbors, and a few friends later… the last of the winter cover crop is in the silo.

We harvested a mix of vetch, peas, clover, and barley that’ll feed the cows through the winter months. Even the dog spent a few hours riding along in the dump truck this week. 🚛

Grateful for another harvest and a full silo. 🤍

Did you know we keep calves with their mamas for the first few months of life?

It’s not the most common setup, but it’s what works best for our herd. The calves are able to nurse when they need to, and they naturally learn things like grazing, following the herd, and just how to “be a cow” from their mamas.

Once they’re around 3 months old, we slowly transition them off milk and out onto pasture with the other calves.

And yes—while you’re enjoying your raw milk, their calves are getting theirs too. 🥛

These were a MUST in our household growing up 😋

Rainy days often find me in the kitchen, cranking out some our our kids favorite treats!

These Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bars have long been Hayley’s very favorite and sure do pair up well with a glass of ice cold Pasture to Pitcher milk!

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups sugar (we use organic cane sugar)
3/4 cups Peanut Butter (we use Big Spoon Roasters Peanut Butter with Wildflower Honey)
3/4 cup softened butter or ghee
5 eggs
1 1/2 T. Vanilla
1 1/2 cups organic all-purpose flour
1/2 t. Baking Powder
3/4 t. Salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Beat sugar, peanut butter and butter/ghee until creamed. Add eggs and vanilla, blending till mixed. Add flour, baking powder and salt, mixing well. Blend in chocolate chips. Spread into an 11 x 15 pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove and allow to cool (or not 😜).
