Farm Friday on a traditional, regenerative farm in the building phase.

This week, in no particular order:

-We brought our Teeswater ram lamb Winston home.

- Chased our flerd in and out of their fences as they protest early seeding grasses.

-Taught a class on making your own mustard

-Paid a crew to clear trees off our perimeter that were to close to roadways, neighbors home/trees, and communication lines to be safe for us to take on our own.

-Brought in more materials for our big project.

-Moved chickens and chicks (they look so weird when they are in thos molting stage!)

- Walked the property and woods. Everything feels so different and foreign.

-Fixed a flat mower tire and knocked the lawn areas back down. We had to wait on the part and the grass mocked us.

- Weeded and planted on repeat.

-Enjoyed the weather. Prayed for rain.

- Picked up our new buck goat Buck Funn...took him through the car wash for fun and to tempt the rain.

A quick trip out to meet this guy who came from Pennsylvania to be the sire of our sheep flock.

He is a Teeswater, a critically endangered dual purpose breed that is fast growing. They are reported to have both a fine carcass for meat production and produce high-quality fiber.

They are very rare in the U.S. Genetic diversity is important and essential, and I really do think that these rare breeds being preserved offers humankind a safety net for breeding resiliency into our food and land management systems.

I believe the name Winston has been established. He is a February lamb, we expect him to not fit in the trunk so neatly by this fall.

Farm Friday:

In no particular order, this week we:

-Celebrated Mother's Day by NOT planting flowers and doing yard work.

-Installed bees. Not anticipating selling honey out of this hive, but we have been beekeeping for about 10 years and wanted to keep that going.

-Moved pigs out to do their work cleaning up areas of the property that have already had goats and chainsaws on them. They are so happy!

-Worked on the garden. Lots of watering to germinate crops and establish plantings. If you aren't aware, we are actually in a drought and it's not looking good. We've starting mulching with grass clippings everywhere that we can to help mitigate plant stress and reduce water usage.

-Gave up on some beds of greens that were really infested with flea beetles. It broke my heart to work them under and replant because we've been working so hard on them, but the new plantings will be so much stronger.

-We planted our tomatoes out on Saturday and by Monday we're panicking that it looked like we lost them all. We didn't. The stress is just so wonderful.

-Moved chickens out on grass. Finally! This weather has been so tricky for them. We keep these first batches near the main coop, which is sort of our livestock hub, so that we can run an extention cord and heat lamp out to them in an emergency if it gets cold. Hopefully we are dome with that now.

-Made progress on our project in the garage.

-Found potatoes that are poking up!

-Tried not to feel overwhelmed by the messy im-between of spring and projects.

-Played

And just to keep it real, we also spent a lot of time at the dentist and orthodontist. We finished 6th grade! We did tons of laundry, rearranged freezers, collected hundreds of eggs, cleaned stalls, rotated goat/sheep pastures, are still watching pregnant goats like hawks, and purged cluttered work areas in preparation for our busier season.

Still just $5 a dozen.Let us know if you need any. Local, happy hens, eating bugs, dandelions, loving life. Sincerely, T...

This is one of my favorite pictures with my mom. I was overdue with my fourth baby, my third daughter (middle sister was napping). It was a really busy season for my husband at work and she came into town for a few weeks to help if he couldn't get home from work in time to get me to the hospital.

We got so much done in that time she was here!

We had borrowed a tiller to break up a garden I had been hand flipping for a few year. Mom said, "We better get a picture of this, it looks like we've done so much and your soil doesn't even have any rocks!" (I grew up in the Rockies and all our gardens are full of rocks, so our soil here really doesn't have any rocks!)

Three generations of strong women in this picture, with my mom representing a shift in family lines of gentle strength and resilience.

The baby I was pregnant with was born way overdue right after my mom left...that quiet stubborn strength she inherited from the women before her.

Farm Friday:

This week we:

-Rotated goats and sheep around and marveled at how much the soil and land have changed since we moved here.

-Planted beets, carrots, lettuce, greens, radishes, summer squash, corn, and so much more in the garden.

-Since Dad was home we started a little project that he didn't even know he wanted to do with his "time off work".

-Weighed in our 4-H lambs that will be shown at the fair (not pictured)

-Added our next round of meat chickens and booted the last babies from the brooder stall to the chicken tractor. Low temps made that a struggle.

-Celebrated a birthday. 🎂

-Are on baby watch for our doe goats who are due any day now.

-Finished kindergarten, second grade, and fourth grade. (6th, 9th, and 9th still have some work to go).

-Our homeschool curriculum for next year arrived.

-Bikes everywhere as farmkids decide walking is just too much.

-And more of course.

This is family farming.
