We started out several years ago when our 3 kids were 4H age with two gilts we purchased from a local breeder and a ewe lamb we bought from my cousin’s herd. Now, I had grown up on a farm where we raised pigs, cattle, and horses; showin cattle and horses, but not pigs. Jay had never had the experience of showing any animal, so, the purchase of pigs and sheep for our kids to raise and show is something totally new! It has taken us many years to watch and learn to feed, groom, and show them to be competative in the show ring.
Our philosophy is you show what you raise and take pride in the hard work you put in to that project. That’s what 4H and FFA is all about. We have taken steps to get our kids started with breeding stock, but from that point, show animals are picked from thier herds each spring. We have had to occasionally purchase outside animals, but they are gilts or ewe lambs to be later added to our herd. When bought, the kids get a say as well as use thier own money that has been saved through sales or winnings.
The other aspect of raising the hogs and sheep is to give the kids a small business. So far, by “word of mouth” we are able to sell most of our finished animals locally. I believe it is important to know where your meat comes from, knowing how it was raised and what went into that animal. The animals here are loved and well cared for, I mean really, 3 kids feeding you, reading books to you, sitting with you, grooming you, don’t you think that’s a pretty good life? We cherish the fact that our family has been blessed to live and raise our children on a farm. They learn about life and death and hard work. Each day given is never taken for granted, it is cherished. When an animal leaves the farm, we know we did the best for that animal that we could to give it a happy life and we thank God for that life we are able to live.
