In June 2014, something unexpected happened at Market Basket. The board of directors made a big decision—they fired their CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas. For many companies, this might not seem unusual, but this time was different.

Arthur T. Demoulas was deeply respected by his employees. Around 25,000 workers admired him because he paid them well, shared company profits, and kept prices low for customers. To them, he wasn’t just a boss—he was someone who cared.

When he was fired, thousands of employees decided to take a stand. They walked off their jobs and refused to restock shelves. At the same time, customers joined in support and stopped shopping at the stores. Across all 71 locations in New England, shelves started to empty, and business slowed down quickly.

Within just a few days, the company’s sales dropped by about 70%. The board tried to pressure workers by threatening to fire them, but the employees didn’t give up. They stayed united, believing they were fighting for something important.

For six weeks, protests continued. Workers stood outside stores, and customers stood beside them. The situation became impossible to ignore.

Finally, the board agreed to sell their shares to Demoulas for $1.6 billion. On August 27, 2014, he returned as CEO.

It was a rare moment where employees and customers came together—and proved that loyalty and unity can bring real change.
