Earlier this month, we hosted the Grow it, Make it, Take it event with Remake Learning Days - South Central PA! The majority of our guests were Devers Elementary School's first graders. They were excited to learn how each plant grows, why the soil matters, and how this farm feeds the York community.

🌻 Our guests also were able to decorate a pot and plant a sunflower to take home!

Garlic scapes have arrived — and they’re one of the most exciting signs of early summer on the farm.

These curly green shoots are the flowering stems of hardneck garlic, harvested before the bulbs fully mature. Their flavor is fresh, mild, and uniquely garlicky — somewhere between garlic, scallions, and asparagus.

This week’s FarmShare includes freshly harvested garlic scapes, and we can’t wait for you to enjoy them.

Here are a few easy ways to use them:

• Chop into stir-fries or sautés
• Blend into pesto or compound butter
• Grill whole with olive oil and sea salt
• Add to eggs, pasta, potatoes, or soups
• Pickle them for a tangy summer treat

Garlic scapes keep well in the fridge for up to 2–3 weeks, so don’t be afraid to experiment.

At the farm, harvesting scapes is an important step that helps the garlic plant focus its energy into growing larger bulbs for later in the season. So when you enjoy scapes, you’re tasting a special and short-lived part of the garlic growing cycle.

Wow, York Academy students DON'T QUIT! 💪

The students worked on beautifying our entrance - and it was not easy.

🌱 3 ft x 20 ft solid strip dug
🌱 All original plants and daffodils dug up (to be replanted)
🌱 Hundreds of weeds pulled
🌱 Stones dug, soil leveled
🌻 Mammoth Sunflower seeds planted

This hard work will become a beautiful back drop to the farm sign in the fall and adorn the front of Willis farm. Bonus - it will also be great for birds and our honey bees. THANK YOU York Academy Regional Charter School!
