There’s days when I wonder why I chose to farm; times when I question God’s placement of me at this farm.

The long days, the stress, the unknown future all fill my mind with doubt.

Nights like these give me reassurance of the choice I’ve made and the opportunity He has given me. There’s so much beauty and stillness in the field when the sun starts to set and the temperature lowers. The sunset makes the plants look a different kind of beautiful.

Suddenly, the hours spent getting the fields ready, the prayers prayed, and all the hard work becomes worth it. There’s peace found in work when the beauty becomes evident!

Expectations vs Reality: True humility

It’s been another dry summer. Every time we see a storm in the forecast we get excited, expecting enough rain for our crops, only to be let down as it breaks up or moves around us. Yet, Wednesday we got some rain. Was it enough? Not even close. We could have used a lot more rain. It was enough to settle the dust for a bit.

So many times we set expectations for God. We tell him what we need and expect Him to immediately give what we ask. Whether it be rain, opportunity, peace, healing, etc. We treat Him as a genie in a bottle.

When He gives us partially what we ask for we complain, telling him it’s not exactly right…like He messed up the order. (I think of the Israelites complaining that God was feeding them manna/birds and not steak!).

The reality is God gives what we need. The reality is all what we had, have, or will have is all God’s. We are only stewards of what he’s given us. If it’s Gods in the first place, why would he not give but what we need? Maybe our expectations need to be lowered to meet Gods reality. The reality that He will take care of us.

I sometimes think the closest we are to God are in times of need and desperation. Weakness, despair, and situational awareness show the reality of our human state and need of Jesus’ strength and Gods sovereignty.

“My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” 2 Corinthians 12:9

I don’t deserve the community God’s given me.

I have no idea where the farm would be without my friends and family. Last Saturday I showed up to find two friends at the farm willing to help pick corn. I never asked them or mentioned I needed help; they just showed up. I have the same with my family, they are always willing to help out and support the farm with helping hands, prayers, and encouragement. They ask for no money in return or reminders that ‘I owe them one’. They just come and help how they can.

I’ve realized this year I wouldn’t be where I am today without God’s grace or the support of family and friends (and our customers, who I consider family). It made me think, when did community go away? When did the support of showing up for your neighbor stop? I get tired of people (*myself included*), thinking they can go through life by themselves, independently. As believers we are one body, all together in this time between the ‘already’ and ‘not yet’ of our spiritual walk. We need to strengthen, encourage, and walk beside each other. We need to show up for others when we feel called. I’m guilty of not showing up and being present for those in my life. I use the excuses of work, tiredness, and ‘busyness’ to cater to my selfishness and not engage in community.

Imagine how strong the body of believers would be if we all came together (like the early church) as one body, as we are called to do…living not for ourselves but for the gospel. Not because it brings benefit to our own lives, but because God’s grace has changed our hearts and minds to be one with Christ leading us to serve one another in humility.

I hope I never get tired of talking about God’s grace.

An old time farmer always tells me, “all it takes is for one thing to go bad in farming and you can lose a lot”. Being young, I always kind of shook my head and acted like I understood.

Every year we fight the birds in our sweet corn. In a drought, they love to perch on the corn and dive down to eat the tips (or more) of the corn. We had little to no birds up until Sunday. Coming out Monday morning hundreds of birds flew out of our patch, leaving damage on most ears of corn in the patch we were picking.

I was frustrated, angry, and upset. I had no idea how we were going to get rid of all them. Each time we picked, we left a lot of ears in the field. But (through Gods sanctification over my life), I knew where to turn. I prayed. I asked a few family members to pray. And we didn’t just stop at praying, we put out our normal tools we use for controlling birds. Later in the day, I saw a few hawks (predatory birds) circle our patch. To me, they were answers to prayer. After a few days, the bird pressure went down. Amazing! Of course, we will continue to fight them for a few more weeks, but we know we have a Father who watches over us and hears us (on Jesus’ behalf).

This week made me think. Where is the first place we turn to in trouble? Do we bring our needs to God (first) and fellow believers (second)? Or do we just try to be self sufficient? Do we stop at prayer or do we use the resources God has given us to address the issues in our lives? Always we have to have faith, but God has given us minds to also act (with wisdom and accordance to scripture). In every circumstance, Gods grace and presence is always with us (out of His unending love for us). What a God we have who graciously walks with us!

Let me tell you about my God! I looked at this patch of beans everyday for the last week, wondering when they’ll be ready. I saw little growth each day. Usually with heat and lack of water, the plant drops blossoms and aborts setting the fruit.

A few nights ago, I looked in our patch and found an overabundance of mature beans...plenty for us to pick! Completely unexpected. They aren’t the prettiest beans in the world, but seeing these made me just step back and praise God!

This week has been hot and I’ve been at my wits end a few times, but God brought me to a ‘stream in the desert’. He is so gracious and loving.

Even in droughts of life he gives us streams of living water! Are you in a ‘drought’ of life? Take hope and courage in Jesus. God hears our prayers (on Jesus’ merit) and sees our faith. Let your faith be actual faith, full dependency and active amidst the struggles.

What a God we serve!!

I drove through our fields last night checking crops. It’s how I unwind after the day. It gives me peace to see crops growing each day and each week. As I went out, the same chorus of song kept playing in my head:

“I sought the Lord, and He heard, and He answered. That’s why I trust in Him, that’s why I trust in Him….my God, my Savior, the One who will never fail. He will never fail.”

These words brought me back to our first patch of corn. In the early spring, I would pray over the crop that it would make it through the cold spring nights…for us to see it come to fruition, for the people to be blessed by the corn (and by our farm), for our employees to be blessed by the farm, for our farm to be a vessel for Gods glory.

This song chorus brought me to a point of recognition of Gods grace and faithfulness. He’s brought us through everything; not because our merit or righteous (none to be found in us), but because of His grace! What a God we serve! Each day is an opportunity to hand over our burdens to Him who freely takes it. It’s not always easy to give over what we think we can control, but it’s worth it in the end. When we fully surrender, we give way for Him to do amazing things. What can you fully surrender to Him today? Do you know how capable He is to take our burdens?

Farming-in-Faith 6/29/26

The ‘Good Life’

“We envision the "good (life)" quite apart from the grace of his presence, promises, and provisions.” -Paul David Tripp

I read this in a devotional recently and it stuck out to me. The author talked about us trying to achieve the ‘good’ life- whatever we envision that is in our human (finite)-mind by using God as just a co-signer on our will. We create the guidelines of a ‘good life’ (whether that’s financial gain, popularity, that ‘one thing’ that will keep us content, etc.) and just ask God to give His sign of approval without any hesitation.

Anyone else guilty of this 🙋‍♂️? I’ve tried to sneak my ‘needs’ to God, thinking he’d just assign everything my heart desires to me. I’ve created the guidelines for a ‘good’ life based off the human standards. You know, the new tractors, the new equipment, the bigger farm, etc.

But as God reminds me (especially the book of Ecclesiastes), there is only one thing that brings true fulfillment in life. Him. He is contentment, He is love, He is fulfillment, He is the good life. And the Good Life that he is, shows us each day (if we look/listen) by his presence, provisions, and promises.

Makes me think, how do we have the audacity to expect God to cater to our ‘needs’? Do we not realize who He is or what He freely and graciously gives us? Do we know that the vanities of this life are nothing compared to Him? Feel convicted? I do too! We’re all in the same boat…in need of Him! Today, let’s change our mindset to align our ‘good’ lives with the actual Good Life Himself.
