Sawan : Significance

Sawan's history can be traced back to the Samudra Manthan, when the gods (devas) and evil forces (asuras) came together to look for โ€˜Amritโ€™, or the elixir of immortality.
This incident caused the ocean to churn, leading to the emergence of many things, including jewellery and animals. However, it also brought together a poison so deadly that anyone who came in contact with it was destroyed.

Amid the chaos that ensued during the month of Sawan, all the Gods pleaded with Lord Shiva for a solution. Shiva consumed the poison, causing his body to turn blue. Goddess Parvati, worried about the poison spreading to the Lord's entire body, entered his throat and stopped the poison from spreading further. Thus, Lord Shiva came to be known as Neelkanth.

Sawan : Worship and rituals
During Shravan, devotees offer prayers not only to Lord Shiva but also to Maa Parvati, Chandra Dev, Lord Vishnu, and Maa Laxmi. Many households perform Satyanarayan Puja.
Common offerings during worship include belpatra (Bilva leaves), incense sticks, oil lamps (diya), flowers, sweets, and fruits, holy Ganga water and milk for abhishek (ritual bathing of the deity).

In Hindu calendar Shravan month is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Whole month is considered auspicious to seek blessing of Lord Shiva. Devotees keep various fasts during Shravan month to please

Lord Shiva.
Shravan month is also known as Sawan month in North Indian states. All Mondays or Somwar(s) which fall during Shravan month are considered highly auspicious for fasting and known as Shravan Somwar or Sawan Somwar Vrats. Many devotees observe sixteen Mondays or Solah Somwar fasting from first Somwar of Sawan month.

All Tuesdays or Mangalwar in Shravan month are dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. Tuesday's fasting during Shravan month is known as . and Hariyali Amavasya are other auspicious days during Shravan month.

There is fifteen days difference in starting time of Shravan month depending on the followed lunar calendar in the region. In Sawan ShivaratriPurnimanta calendar, usually followed by NortMangal Gauri Vrath Indian states, Shravan month starts fifteen days before Amanta calendar.
In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, Amanta Lunar Calendar is followed while in North Indian states Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and JharkhandPurnimanta Calendar is followed. Hence half of the Sawan Somwar dates differ in both calendars.
In Nepal, and some parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Sawan Somwar is observed as per Solar Calendar. Hence, Sawan Somwar dates in these regions might differ from Amanta as well as Purnimanta calendar.
