when we started the BrownSense Market, we broke all the rules one must comply with when organising an event. This was unintentional, as we didn't know any better. We learnt along the way and thankfully didn't have any unfortunate incidents.

next year, we bring back not only 10 years of experience, but even more unwavering passion and data.

We’re bringing the BrownSense Market back in February 2026. To keep it sustainable, we’re shifting to a sponsor-supported model so vendors can focus on selling, building relationships, and growing their businesses.

As part of this shift, we’re collecting vendor testimonials to include in our sponsor packs. If you’ve traded with us before and haven’t seen our email, please take a minute to share your experience here: https://forms.gle/bR2GaJud1qebDawq8

most of us don’t have that uncle or aunt we can call when we need funding. many of us are first-generation entrepreneurs, figuring it out in these streets while we’re in survival mode and still trying to grow our businesses.

BrownSense was created to be that space where our hard work can start to pay off. so that our children don’t have to start from scratch like we did.

this is why we have to be intentional about how we show up here. we are not building relationships to extract, but to create value that feeds all of us. the entrepreneur, the customer, the community, the broader ecosystem.

as we start a new week, remember. every connection you make here can either repeat the cycle or rewrite it. choose to build in a way that makes it easier for the next generation to start further than you did.

why retailers choose BrownSense to curate markets

retail is changing. shoppers want more than aisles and specials. they want to see themselves in your space. they want brands that feel local, credible, and connected to real people. that is where BrownSense comes in.

for almost a decade, BrownSense has built trusted bridges between Black-owned smes and customers across South Africa. we know the culture, we know the craft, and we know how to turn that trust into footfall, basket growth, and loyalty for retailers.

what we bring to your store
a) community trust that money cannot buy
our community shows up because they believe in the movement. when BrownSense curates a market, customers come for discovery and stay for connection. that translates into dwell time and repeat visits.

b) market access at scale
we do the hard work of finding, vetting, and preparing quality Black-owned suppliers. our curation favours product-market fit, merchandising readiness, and brand stories that resonate with your shoppers.

c) culturally aligned enterprise solutions
activations are not entertainment. they are engineered touchpoints that respect culture, drive sales, and protect your brand. we design layouts, flows, and storytelling that fit your store and your customers.

d) the business integrity guarantee
every partner and trader is vetted and accountable. you get compliance, professionalism, and clear reporting. no shortcuts.

how our curated markets perform

a) customer experience: fresh products, live demos, and maker stories turn a shopping trip into an event.

b) commercial impact: new reasons to visit increase weekend traffic and average basket size.

c) brand equity: visible commitment to inclusive growth strengthens trust with the communities you serve.

d) esd and csi value: you support formalisation, jobs, and local supply chains while meeting reporting needs.

the social impact you can stand behind

a) jobs and income where it matters: each market creates direct trading income for founders and part-time work for local crew (set-up, security, cleaning, content). ripple effects carry into families and township economies.

b) youth and women participation: intentional vendor mix prioritises youth- and women-led smes, broadening access to market and leadership visibility.

c) skills transfer and formalisation: our readiness process (pricing, packaging, stock planning, point-of-sale) improves unit economics and record-keeping, helping smes secure future retail listings and finance.

d) local supply chain development: repeat markets help vendors stabilise demand, invest in capacity, and onboard neighbouring micro-suppliers (bakers, printers, logistics).

e) measurable outcomes: we report vendors trading, average takings, job shifts created, and returning-vendor rates—so you can show tangible esd/csi results, not just activity.

community outcomes beyond the till

a) belonging and pride: shoppers see makers from their own neighbourhoods win on a big stage. that grows affinity for your centre and builds positive, repeatable community stories.

b) safer, vibrant public space: well-run markets with clear codes of conduct and family-friendly programming increase time spent on-site and strengthen a culture of care.

c) local storytelling, less friction: we use community-first content and on-site hosts who speak the language and understand the nuances, reducing complaints and building goodwill.

d) shared value events calendar: align markets with school terms, payday cycles, and community dates to smooth footfall and spread opportunity through the year.

our curation model in action

1. discover
we source high-potential Black-owned brands across categories your shoppers already love.

2. prepare
we run readiness checks on pricing, packaging, inventory planning, and point of sale. brands arrive retail-ready.

3. design
we build a clean, modern market layout that integrates with your store flow and operations.

4. activate
we execute with trained crew, clear vendor guidelines, safety protocols, and content capture for your channels.

5. measure
we report footfall signals, sales indicators, vendor performance, and shopper feedback. you see what worked and why.

why it matters now

South African shoppers are discerning and value-conscious. they reward authenticity and consistency. retailers that open their space to credible township and peri-urban makers are not just ticking a box. they are building the next generation of customer love and category growth—while creating real community value that lasts beyond the weekend.

BrownSense is the partner that turns that intention into ex*****on you can trust.

We are working on bringing The BrownSense Market back next year February..

As part of that process, we are looking at having sponsors for the market. This is something we decided to do when we closed the market as a result of covid19.

Markets cost us a lot more than generating any income. The only times we made some profit were when we had an activation, and those were too few.

We have sent an email to previous vendors asking them to complete the following Google Forms as we want to include testimonials as part of the sponsorship requests.

If you haven't seen our email, please help us by completing the following form: https://forms.gle/SySbNe9JqSYFhjbx6
