East Asia is home to some of the world's most beloved and diverse teas, each with unique flavours, traditions, and health benefits. Here’s a look at some of the most popular varieties:
️⃣ Green Tea (Lǜchá, 绿茶) – Green tea is one of the most popular and widely consumed teas in East Asia. Unlike black tea, green tea leaves are quickly steamed or pan-fired after harvesting to prevent oxidation, preserving their green color and fresh, grassy flavour.
️⃣Black Tea (Hóngchá, 红茶) – Black tea is fully oxidized, giving it a dark color and rich, bold flavours. In China, black tea is known as hóngchá, or "red tea," because of the reddish hue of its brewed liquid.
️⃣ Pu-erh Tea (Pǔ'ěrchá, 普洱茶) – Pu-erh is a fermented tea, aged for months or even years to develop its unique earthy, woody flavours. Unlike other teas, pu-erh undergoes microbial fermentation, which enhances its complexity and potential health benefits.
️⃣Matcha (抹茶) – Matcha is a powdered green tea, made by grinding shade-grown tea leaves into a fine, vibrant green powder. Unlike regular green tea, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is whisked into water, meaning you consume the entire leaf and all its nutrients.
️⃣Yuja-cha (유자차) – Also known as Korean Honey Citron Tea, this sweet and tangy tea is made from yuja (yuzu) fruit and honey. It’s packed with vitamin C and is a go-to remedy for colds and sore throats! 🍋🍯
