One thing about life at sea… you never quite know what you’re going to find 🌊

Today is definitely one for the memory banks.

After landing a beautiful yellowfin tuna on handline, we did what we always do — immediately ikijimi and gut the fish to reduce core temperature and preserve quality.

But this time something unexpected happened.

Inside the stomach… there was movement.

This little fellow must have only just been eaten — and it turned out to be his incredibly lucky day to end up onboard Greenfish vessel AJ.

We carefully placed him into a bucket and kept refreshing the seawater throughout the day. For a few hours it honestly felt like we had our own little pet fish onboard.

Once he had recovered enough strength, we safely released him and watched him swim away.

After some digging, we identified him as an Atlantic Oreo (Oreosoma atlanticum) — and in all my years around fish, this is the first one I’ve ever seen.

A few cool facts:
• Juveniles look completely different to adults and have this incredible spiky appearance
• They are deep-water fish and are rarely seen alive at the surface
• Their large eyes help them in darker ocean conditions
• Adults become far smoother and less “alien-looking” than this juvenile stage
• Encounters like this are rare and remind us how much of the ocean remains unseen

One fish’s bad day became another fish’s very lucky day.

Respect the ocean 🌊

🐟 Today I visited the Jingshen Fish Market in Beijing and was blown away by the incredible seafood on display.

From sea cucumbers to lobster and just about everything in between, every aisle had something new to discover. The scale, the energy and the variety were seriously impressive.

What struck me most though was the culture and tradition around seafood — seeing how different parts of the world celebrate and enjoy what comes from the ocean.

Travelling always gives perspective, and it reminded me just how lucky we are back home in Cape Town. We have access to some truly world-class seafood right on our doorstep and often don’t realise how special that is.

A very cool experience and one I’ll remember for a long time 🇨🇳🌊🇿🇦

Out there, you realise how small you really are.

One little boat in a vast ocean.
An albatross gliding effortlessly above it all.
Wind, swell, salt, and miles from shore.

This is not factory fishing.
This is wild, raw, unpredictable Cape waters.
One hook. One line. One fish at a time.

Sometimes the ocean reminds us exactly who’s in charge. 🌊

Smiles all round 😄🐟

Skipper Andrew with crewman David, and Jan & Ben in the background, holding up an incredible Yellowfin Tuna pushing close to 70–80kgs.

Moments like these are about so much more than just the fish. They’re a reminder of how privileged we are to work on the ocean and harvest in a responsible, respectful way, appreciating every catch, every crew member, and every opportunity the sea provides.

There’s a certain kind of pride that comes with doing things properly. You can see it in the smiles, the teamwork, and the passion these boys carry every time they head out to sea 💙

There aren’t many seafood suppliers who get to experience the full journey of a fish, from catching it out at sea, to handling it with care, processing it, and finally delivering it straight to your door.

We’re fortunate enough to be one of them 💙

It gives us a deeper appreciation for the little things many people never get to see… like the incredible colours of a Yellowfin Tuna as it comes out the water. The electric blues, silvers, and gold that shimmer, a reminder of just how wild and beautiful our oceans really are.

It’s moments like these that keep our passion for sustainable, responsible fishing alive 🎣🐟

Tuna poling is one of the most selective and low-impact fishing methods in the world. 🎣

One hook. One line. One fish at a time.

Unlike large-scale industrial methods, tuna pole fishing targets individual fish at the surface, meaning:
✅ no seabed damage
✅ no low bycatch
✅ no massive nets sweeping the ocean
✅ small crews supporting local coastal communities
✅ better handling and quality of fish

At Greenfish, we believe how your fish is caught matters just as much as how it tastes.

These fish are caught by skilled fishermen using traditional techniques that have been passed down for generations. It’s hard work, long days at sea, and real craftsmanship.

Sustainable seafood is not just about the species — it’s about the fishing method, the people behind it, and the long-term health of our oceans. 🌊

When you support responsibly caught pole tuna, you support:
• healthier oceans
• local jobs
• lower environmental impact
• traceable seafood
• ethical fishing practices

Low impact. High quality. Honest fishing.

When I think of my mom, I think of crayfish 🦞❤️

She used to tell us stories about growing up in Mowbray, when my grandpa worked down at the docks in Cape Town harbour. Back then, crayfish was considered poor man’s food. He’d come home with bags of it, and they’d cook it outside on a small stove in the garden before sitting around a table covered in newspaper, eating with their hands, laughing, and sharing stories as a family.

Funny how life changes.

Today, crayfish has become something luxurious, but for me, it still represents something far more valuable, family, togetherness, shared meals, storytelling, and memories made around a table.

And to this day, every crayfish season, the very first crayfish is always for my mom. We still continue the tradition: a big pot in the middle of the table, newspaper everywhere, a jar of mayonnaise, and everyone eating with their hands.

This Mother’s Day, we want to celebrate those special memories ❤️

Chasing the last light 🌅

Full day on the water, rods bent, fish in the hatch… and now it’s a race home. Flat seas, golden sky, and that feeling when the harbour lights start calling.

There’s something about running in at sunset after a proper day’s fishing — tired hands, salty skin, and a boat full of stories.

Home just after dark. Job done.
