Looking for a little Cape Salmon inspiration? 🐟🍋

Cape Salmon, also known as Geelbek, is a beautiful local fish with firm white flesh and a delicate flavour, and it really doesn’t need too much fussing with.

In this recipe, we simply pan-fry the Cape Salmon until golden and serve it with a fresh Mediterranean-style topping of olives, tomatoes, capers, herbs and lemon. It’s fresh, colourful and packed with flavour, while still letting the fish be the star of the plate.

Perfect for an easy weeknight dinner or something a little special for the weekend.

Celebrating the women behind Ocean Jewels 💙

We couldn’t finish our Women’s Month series without introducing the woman who started it all, Julie, owner and founder of Ocean Jewels.

20 years ago, in 2006, Ocean Jewels began with a small stall at the Old Biscuit Mill’s Neighbourgoods Market, a love of good fish and a determination to get more Capetonians cooking and enjoying seafood at home.

A lot has changed since then. Ocean Jewels has grown from a market stall, to a restaurant, and today into the online fish shop and kitchen that so many of you know. Through all those different chapters, Julie has remained at the heart of it.

She sources fish, develops new products and recipes, chats to customers, plans what’s coming next and, like everyone in a small business, jumps in wherever she’s needed. Throughout it all, knowing where our seafood comes from, supporting responsible fishing and helping customers feel confident cooking fish at home have remained at the heart of what she does.

Ocean Jewels has never been just about selling fish. It’s about the relationships built with our customers, fishermen, suppliers and the people who have been part of the business along the way.

And after 20 years, Julie is still finding new things to do with fish! 🐟💙

So we’re ending Women’s Month by celebrating our founder, and all the wonderful women who work alongside her to make Ocean Jewels what it is today.

Celebrating the women behind Ocean Jewels 💙

For our next Women’s Month post, we’re celebrating someone who has quite literally grown up with Ocean Jewels, my daughter Bronwyn.

Bron has been part of the Ocean Jewels story from the very beginning and even helped choose our name way back in 2006! Her first “job” was at our Old Biscuit Mill market stall, handing out samples of cooked tuna to customers. When we opened our restaurant, she graduated to taking orders and serving tables, and throughout her school years, you could pretty much guarantee that every school holiday would find her somewhere around the shop helping out.

After graduating from university last year, Bron has become an even bigger part of the day-to-day running of Ocean Jewels. She helps with everything from admin and looking after our customers, to stock management, the odd delivery and jumping into the kitchen whenever an extra pair of hands is needed.

Having grown up around the business, she knows Ocean Jewels inside and out, and it’s very special for me to now have my daughter working alongside me and bringing her own ideas and energy to the business she has been part of for so long.

Thank you Bron for all the years of helping, from handing out tuna samples as a little girl to everything you do for Ocean Jewels today. 💙🐟

Celebrating the women behind Ocean Jewels 💙

Many of you will know Andrea from your deliveries. She has got to know so many of you along the way, and we know how much our regular customers love seeing her arrive at the door, with very often time for a quick chat before she's off to the next delivery.

But Andrea’s contribution goes far beyond logistics and deliveries. She’s an important sounding board for new ideas, helps plan our events and is always there to lend a hand, solve a problem or offer support wherever it’s needed.

So this Women’s Month, we’re celebrating Andrea and saying a very big THANK YOU for all the driving, organising, planning, problem-solving and general all-round support she gives Ocean Jewels. We really couldn’t do it without you! 💙🚚🐟

Have you ever wondered where all our fish carcasses go? 🐟

At Ocean Jewels, we believe in making the most of every fish and keeping waste to a minimum. Sustainability isn't just about what species we source, it's also about how we use every part of the fish.

Many of our fish carcasses are used in-house to make our rich, flavourful fish stock, perfect for adding depth to soups, risottos, curries and seafood dishes.

The rest find a second purpose with our friends , who transform them into a nutritious fish broth for dogs. Packed with natural goodness, it's a healthy treat for man's best friend and ensures that nothing goes to waste.

From your dinner table to your furry friend's bowl, we're proud to be part of a more sustainable food system ♻️💙

Celebrating the women behind Ocean Jewels 💙

This Women’s Month, we want to shine a little spotlight on Faith, one of the absolute superstars behind the scenes at Ocean Jewels.

Faith makes all our meal kits and prepared fish dishes, from our kebabs and fish pies, to preparing our fish fingers, goujons and handmade fishcakes. She prepares our fish stock, cooks the sushi rice and even fillets a little when needed.

She is always willing to jump in and is a huge part of what keeps our kitchen running and your orders going out each week.

So this Women’s Month, we’re celebrating Faith and saying a very big THANK YOU for all the hard work, care and energy she puts into Ocean Jewels. We really couldn’t do it without you, Faith! 💙

Calamari Galore at Ocean Jewels!

Did you know we stock three different types of calamari? Whether you're looking for something quick and easy or a freezer standby, we've got an option for you.

🦑 Patagonian Calamari – beautifully tender and full of flavour. Even better, buy a pack and we'll include some of our Ocean Jewels Calamari Spice Mix, the same spice we used back in the restaurant days!

🦑 Calamari Steaks – great value, super versatile and they defrost in a flash. Cut into strips, score and pan-fry, or cook them whole.

🦑 Calamari Strips – already cut and ready to cook. Season, flash-fry and serve with lemon, toss through a salad or add your favourite dipping sauce.

Our fishcakes really are made from scratch 🐟💙

And when we say fishcakes, we mean proper fishcakes made with proper fish. We use the same top-quality fish that we sell to you our customers.

We start by cooking the fish and boiling and mashing the potatoes. These are combined with freshly chopped onions, dried herbs and spices before Faith gets to work making every single fishcake by hand.

Each one is shaped, given a light dusting of flour and then fried until beautifully golden. It takes a little more time doing them this way, but we think you can taste the difference!

We also make a gluten-free version using dried herbs and cornflour, so no one has to miss out 😉

A huge thank you to the incredible students from Cooktastic who helped me during my cooking demo at the Sustainable Seafood Festival 👩‍🍳✨

From helping with prep, plating up samples, keeping everything organised (and cleaning up the chaos I created along the way 😄) — you were absolute stars!

💚🐟 A little extra flavour thanks to Pesto Princess 🐟💚

A big thank you to our friends at for generously sponsoring the prizes for our cooking demo at the Sustainable Seafood Festival this weekend ✨

We loved being able to share some of their delicious products and show just how easy it is to create flavour-packed seafood dishes at home.

For the demo, we paired our hake with some Pesto Princess favourites, proving once again that good-quality ingredients and fresh fish are a perfect match. 💙
