Fed by a cluster of springs that provided perennial fresh water to Khoekhoen pastoralists as well as to sailors and t

he Company’s Gardens from the 17th century, this farm grew vegetables and fruit that fed the growing settlement and colony and supplied passing ships with essential produce to the turn of the 20th century. Swallowed by urban expansion, the productive farmlands were converted to a housing syndicate in 1901 and the original homestead standing on the site was demolished in 1957 to construct a bowling green, which fell into disuse and neglect in recent decades. OZCF seeks to re-connect the Oranjezicht neighbourhood and the rest of Cape Town to this neglected piece of heritage through design, gardening activity and outreach, and to use it as a catalyst to build social cohesion across communities, to develop skills among the unemployed, to educate residents and their children and others about food, environmental and related issues, to beautify public space and to champion unused or under-utilised green spaces in the City Bowl. The Farm is open Monday-Saturday from 08h00 to 14h00. The OZCF Market is held every Saturday (08:15 to 2pm) and Sunday (9am to 2pm) and Wednesday nights (5pm to 9pm) at Granger Bay, V&A Waterfront.

REMEMBERING SIBA

Siba was 23 years old.
He was young. Vibrant. Always smiling. Always ready for a conversation, a laugh, a dance - and, of course, something good to eat from the market.

This week, we lost him.
He was shot and killed in a township.
Another young life taken by violence.
And we have to ask ourselves: when did this become something we simply accept?
How many more families must receive that phone call?

How many more young people must be buried?
How many more colleagues, friends, brothers, sisters and children must we lose?

This is not normal.
This is not inevitable.
And it cannot become something we learn to live with.

We mourn Siba.
We stand with his family.
We stand with his friends and colleagues.
But we also demand action.
We need protection.
We need accountability.
We need safer communities.
We need a response that matches the scale of the crisis.

Because Siba was not a statistic.
He was 23.
He had a whole life ahead of him.
We will remember him.
And we will not accept that this is simply the way things are.
🖤

There are some things you don’t need to reinvent.

Biltong is one of them.

At Stokkiesdraai Biltong, Armand Viljoen is the charismatic face you’ll usually find at the stall, while Cobus Groenewald is the man behind the biltong itself, keeping alive a tradition that has been part of South African food culture for generations.

The meat is carefully selected, from sirloin and rump sourced in Botswana and Namibia to kudu, springbok and other game.

Then comes the simple part.

Salt. Time. Care. And even a secret spice… ✨

No unnecessary additives. No shortcuts.

Just good, honest ingredients, traditional methods and, most importantly, true passion.

The result is biltong that doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t. It is fresh, naturally cured and best enjoyed within a week. which, if you’ve ever met Armand, you’ll know is less of a problem than it sounds.

According to him, biltong is addictive.

So addictive, in fact, that Stokkiesdraai has its own emergency hotline: 0800 BILTONG.

We are not sure what happens when you call… but we suspect it involves another slice.

Every week, the Oranjezicht City Farm Market is filled with fruits and vegetables you’ve probably never tasted before.

Some are ancient heirloom varieties. Others are grown by farmers who have chosen to cultivate something a little different. They may look unfamiliar, but each has its own season, its own story, and often, far more flavour than the supermarket varieties we’ve become used to.

In this series, Sheryl introduces some of the market’s most intriguing produce, exploring where it comes from, what makes it special, how to enjoy it, and why it’s worth taking home.

Every unfamiliar fruit or vegetable represents a choice made by a local farmer to grow beyond the ordinary. And every time we choose to buy it, we help make that choice worthwhile.

By supporting local, seasonal produce - especially the varieties we don’t already know - we encourage biodiversity, strengthen local farming, preserve generations of growing knowledge, and reward farmers for growing food for flavour, not just uniformity or shelf life.

With hundreds of varieties of fruit and vegetables arriving at the market from farms within three hours of Cape Town, every visit is an opportunity to discover a new flavour, a new favourite, and a deeper connection to the people who grow our food.

Come curious. Leave inspired. And most importantly, taste something new.

🍇 A Vineyard in the City

Hidden beneath the slopes of Table Mountain lies Cape Town's only inner-city vineyard.

The Clos d'Oranje Urban Vineyard is a partnership between the Oranjezicht City Farm and Minimalist Wines, bringing together urban farming, low-intervention winemaking and agroecology through hands-on learning and shared experiences.
Set on historic stone terraces that have been part of the Oranjezicht landscape for more than two centuries, the vineyard continues a story deeply rooted in Cape Town's agricultural heritage. The land has been made available by the Andrag family, allowing this unique space to continue as a place for community, learning and winemaking.

As a community-founded and community-supported non-profit, the Oranjezicht City Farm exists through the dedication of volunteers, partners and supporters who continue to grow food, share knowledge and strengthen community connections.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the first A Vineyard in the City workshop. Together, we explored the story of the vineyard, shared knowledge and celebrated the beginning of this exciting new chapter.

🌿 More workshops are on the way.
✅️ Follow along to be the first to hear about upcoming dates, seasonal updates and more stories from A Vineyard in the City.

Every great food story starts with a moment of courage.

For Taariq, it came when he realised the part he loved most wasn’t simply cooking someone else’s menu, it was creating his own.

The freedom to cook without boundaries. To follow his curiosity. To bring together the flavours, memories and traditions that had shaped him.

That freedom became Homeboys.

What began as Friday evenings serving food from home to friends, neighbours and anyone who arrived hungry has grown into one of the market’s much-loved food traders.

Today, Homeboys is a celebration of bold, comforting flavours inspired by Indian, North African and Asian cuisines, woven together with Taariq’s own story and the recipes and traditions passed down by his mother.

Every dish is personal.
Every plate tells a story.
